(Not So) Mellow Yellow

Hello Sunshine! With the warmer weather and brighter skies, it's about time we usher in some color back into your wardrobe. Trust me when I say this is a challenge for me. When I open my closet what colors to I see? Mostly darks and white. Put that together and it makes grey. Catch me any day of the week and I'm probably wearing grey. It's not one of the happiest colors in the universe. I can admit that I need to cut back on my grey shirt collection. I may need some grey therapy just like I really need stripes therapy. So in an effort to introduce different colors into my clothing, I figured I'd highlight some of my favorite springy hues this month starting with yellow.

Yellow is a color that I've always liked but had trouble wearing. The undertones of my skin are definitely yellow. Not olive, not brown, but yellow. I felt like if I wore the color I'd look like a banana, especially with my freckles. Stop laughing at me. I'm sure some of you may be able to relate. Anyway, for the longest time I'd see a bold yellow dress or accessories and think I couldn't possibly wear it. I began to think of the color in a very negative way associating it with mustard or squash, two things I can't stand. Just like other colors, yellow comes in different shades too. I just needed to find the right one to complement my complexion. Something that wouldn't wash me out but also something not too obnoxious. You know what I mean. I needed to find a yellow that would make me look like a golden goddess or a pretty flower.

My opinion about yellow slowly began to shift. It started with nail colors. I'd see a buttery yellow or a golden rod like this The Wonder Yellows by Wet n Wild and think 'Huh, this is kinda cute.' I put it on and figured well if it looks good on my fingertips, then why not on the rest of my body. From there I moved on to scarves and accessories, mixing yellow with different patterns and other colors. Then came tops and dresses. Talk about making a statement when you enter a room. I paired a yellow dress with a white blazer and my girlfriend said I looked presidential. Oh yes! I've even started buying yellow furniture pieces. Can you blame me? That chevron is killer!

I've realized that there are so many options when you open yourself up to yellow. It's one of my favorite colors for the season. You can wear it from head to toe. Try it sometime. Yellow is fun. It's vibrant. It's great no matter your shape, size, or your age. Yellow can brighten up any day and make you shine.
