Two-Time Cancer Survivor Berhsan Shaw Stars in “Love In The City”

Cancer? I can’t believe that this is the same Bershan Shaw whom I shared classes with at my alma mater Syracuse University. The author, warrior life coach, motivational speaker, entrepreneur and two-time breast cancer survivor co-stars on OWN’s new docu-series Love In The City.

I found the press release announcement amongst the many that I receive daily in my blog’s gmail account and I nearly fell off my chair when I read the the four words that preceded her name “Two-Time Cancer Survivor”.

At Syracuse, there was only one word that summed up Bershan and that word was “flawless.” Back then, while most of us were running around campus in sweats, t-shirts and head scarves, Bershan somehow found the time to get her hair, makeup and outfit right. She was always so stylish and I actually thought she was a model at one point. She also had this air of “wealth” about her and reading that she was diagnosed with stage-4 cancer and given months to live was shocking. This discovery to me was a reminder that wealth and access to the best healthcare does not and cannot protect us from this disease. We must remain vigilant regarding our health and stay in tune with our bodies.

The good news is that Bershan beat her diagnosis, and has been cancer free for the last five years. She is now co-starring in Love In The City, a docu-series along with friends Chenoa Maxwell, Kiyah Wright and Tiffany Jones on OWN :Oprah Winfrey Network.

Love In The City Synopsis

Viewers will be introduced to Bershan Shaw as a survivor – in every sense of the word. After surviving breast cancer in 2007, Bershan was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 2009 and told she only had three months to live. This devastating news sent her on a journey to change her life and help others. As a motivational speaker, certified Life Coach and a spokesperson for the Johns Hopkins Medical Breast Cancer Vaccine, Bershan has been helping young women realize their potential and take care of their mind, body and soul.

Armed with newfound purpose and to make an impact, Bershan’s life goal is to help people reinvent themselves, step into their greatness and find their warrior within. With a mission to inspire others to not live in fear and silence, she founded the URAWARRIOR platform, which includes the “Warrior Wall” – an online campaign to encourage, support and to allow people to share their voice.

On the URAWARRIOR.com site, people from all walks of life can upload videos, photos and share their stories of overcoming adversity. Bershan Shaw founded the site to show others that everyone can heal through human connection and encourages people to share their stories – just as she was open with hers. The full social networking site, will launch in early May 2014, and will feature exclusive access such as creating profiles and engaging with others in the community one on one.

Love In The City launched April 12th and airs Saturdays at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.
