Macy’s Boston 2014 Christmas Tree Lighting

Macy’s at downtown crossing in Boston ushered in the 2014 Holiday season with a live concert and an elaborate Christmas tree lighting ceremony last Friday. Of lately, I’ve been signing up for blogging assignment more for the opportunity to experience something new than for the money. I had never attended a tree lighting ceremony before and so I didn’t know what to expect.

I knew the event was going to be outdoors so I dressed in double layers before donning my quilted motorcycle jacket, scarf, hat and two different pairs of gloves. {Full ones for when my fingers felt like they were ready to fall off and half ones to wear when I was taking pictures}.

Even with the frigid temperature, the sun was shining and therefore the driving conditions were perfect for the 2 hour drive into Boston. To save money, I opted to park at the Braintree MBTA subway station {$7} and took the train to downtown crossing {$5.30 roundtrip}.

I arrived an hour before the event started and despite the cold, the crowd was already deep. Even dressed in layers, the cold was too much for me and I ended up inside the ground floor of the Boston Macy’s store. That’s where I discovered the Inglot makeup counter. After doing some light shopping, I headed back outside just in time to catch the end of the Boston Children’s Choir rendition of Silent Night. Sons of Serendip performed next. I was looking forward to seeing them perform live and they did not disappoint. Every note was perfect and carefully composed. The audience was ecstatic and we were all moved when they did their rendition of O Holy Night .

Country singer Jessie James Decker was a sweet surprise and a crowd favorite. I later learned that she is the Jessie from the E! reality show Eric & Jessie. You didn’t have to be a country music fan to appreciate her performance because this girl can REALLY sing!!!

Before You Exit was the last performers on stage before Boston’s honorable mayor Marty Walsh came out to give the final words and Boston Celtic’s forward, Brandon Bass (#30) was introduced to talk about the Make A Wish foundation. A chorus of teenage voices screamed in unison when Before You Exit was introduced and the screaming became louder as the teen heart throbs took stage. They had the entire crowd, moms and dad’s included, rocking to their music. After their performance, Santa was brought out and the tree was finally lighted. And no, they didn’t just flip a switch. They flipped the switch and then released a ton of ticker tape. There was not a scowl or grinch in the crowd as the ticker tape rained down on us. It was a really beautiful event and is a must do for your 2015 list.
