Buttoning quandaries (up or down?)

Ph. Michael C Dumler
For those of us who have chosen to make a living out of long-winded descriptions pertaining to the way a garment looks, feels or should be styled, wording is everything. Hence why I have spent the better part of this morning trying to figure out the difference between a button up and a button down. An existential nuance, surely, when talking about the long sleeved, collared top that Man on the Street would simply call 'shirt'.
For according to the Wangs' and the Diesels' of this world, this season the trick is all in the fastening. Forget all you know about how-low-can-you-go, and other cleavage-happy techniques to make the shirt sexy. Indeed, if you are getting it right, it is your stomach that should be showing this summer.
A cruel trick indeed to play on all the midriff-baring phobics like myself who would rather dye their hair orange than have to spend the summer flaunting their non existent abs to the world. Hard knock fashion victim life. Thank god for the high waist, my new BFF. Take that, Alex.
