Vive Lemaire

Christophe Lemaire Fall-Winter 2014 via Style.com
I couldn't help but feel a major pang of excitement yesterday when the news broke that Christophe Lemaire was to leave Hermès to focus on his own line. The master craftsman took over from Jean-Paul Gaultier in 2010, reportedly boosting ready-to-wear sales in a big way for the luxurious maison, better known for its iconic leather goods. In those four short years, Hermès has become a firm ringleader on the PFW schedule, despite its cautiously conservative heritage and painfully high price-tags.

And while I'm sure the bastion of luxury will be sorry to see him go, the decision makes perfect sense after the buzz created by his own show last season. Editors and buyers all agreed his was by far one of the most interesting tickets of the week, and looking back at the quietly pared-back aesthetic formulated for Fall, I can't help but agree. Style over fashion; extraordinary materials; incredible attention to detail; not to mention the styling! And how refreshing to see an acclaimed designer choose to invest some TLC into his own brand, rather than having to mould his ideas to fit the DNA of a big name. Best of luck to him.

As always, he will need to be replaced. As will whoever takes over from him. The game of designer musical chairs, it seems, is not over any time soon.
