The Armoury: a bulwark of quality craftmanship

The article - L'articolo The Armoury was founded in Hong Kong in 2010 by Mark Cho, Ethan Newton and Alan See, three friends bounded by a mutual passion for classic menswear attire. This is not the umpteenth multibrand shop selling big international brands with huge marketing investments and no quality behind their products. The guys at The Armoury look for artisans with a story, able to create masterpieces of extreme quality and timeless style. After the success of the Hong Kong shop, recently they also opened a new shop in New York. Basically they aim to put men in contact with the bespoke tailoring industry and artisanal products. They personally select the artisans, working close with them and organizing trunk shows several times during the year. “We believe the foundation of every man’s wardrobe should be classic style” – Mark explains to me. Classic clothes suit men regardless of their age, “We have seen men as young as early 20’s and as old as late 70’s both in Hong Kong and New York” – says Alan.

In 2012 Jake Grantham joins the team, a young English man with an enduring interest in classic clothing developed while he was still a student at London’s Goldsmiths College. At The Armoury they don’t just deal with Italian crafstmen, having a lot of Japanese shoemakers, tailors, briefcases makers and also artisans hailing from Austria or Spain, to name a few. “Regional tailoring is like regional cuisine – done well they are all beautiful and it would be a pity to limit yourself to one over the other” says Ethan, who admits to prefer the Neapolitan tailoring since it is lighter and more suitable for the climate in Hong Kong. Future projects? They are working on a bigger Hong Kong store and improving their online store, adding even more content.
