Shampoos For Oily Scalp and Fine Hair

My hair is fine and straight, and flat. My scalp does get greasy if I didn’t wash my hair every day, and it doesn’t help that the weather here is hot and humid. When I’m in a cooler weather that is less humid, I can go for about 2 days without washing my hair. I’ve been trying out a few shampoos, and I’d like to share with you which one works best for me. Shu Uemura Art Of Hair Cleansing Oil Shampoo Anti-Oil Astringent Cleanser For Oily Hair (400ml)

I picked this up a while ago after reading some positive reviews. This is made for those with oily scalp and it’s supposed to clear the scalp of oil and maintains a healthy balance of oil production. The words “cleansing oil” got me confused, because we have to use it differently for facial cleansing oils. However, you just use this as you would a normal shampoo. I love the scent of this shampoo! Initially, it did my hair wonders. It would stay oil free for the whole day, and my hair was soft and manageable even without conditioner. However, after a couple of months, I noticed that my scalp would get oily before the 10 hour mark. I’m not sure why I have these experiences with most shampoos. They’d work great, but after a few months, they don’t work as well anymore.

That said, this is a shampoo that I don’t mind repurchasing. I bought it from HQHair when there was 20% off their regular price.

Aubrey Calaguala Fern Treatment Shampoo (325ml)

I was at TNS Skinlab to browse some natural organic shampoo and was recommended this brand. According to the sales rep, customers’ feedback was positive, and many of them went back to repurchase. You know what? While it was weird to have a shampoo that comes out brown and smells a little like herb, it actually prevented oil buildup better than the Shu Uemura shampoo mentioned above. This Aubrey shampoo doesn’t foam much and it does leave my hair a little squeaky clean. To makeup for it, I’d have to use my Matrix Exquisite Oil as a leave in conditioner. If the days aren’t too hot and if I didn’t sweat much, I can actually wash my hair on alternate days. I’m now onto my second bottle because yes, it worked THAT well.

Philip B Peppermint & Avocado Volumizing & Clarifying Shampoo (350ml)

I was sent a sample of this together with my skincare purchase on Cult Beauty, and boy was I glad. It’s a green shampoo, you know, it representing peppermint and avocado, foams well, and clarifies the scalp for a fresh start. FRESH it is! While I was massaging my hair, it literally felt like winter on my head. It was cooling and minty and so comfortable! It’s a treat especially for hot weather. My scalp feels clean and my hair is left bouncy and soft even without conditioner. After trying that sample, I just had to purchase a full sized one. I am now rotating this with the Aubrey shampoo. The main reason I’m not using the Shu Uemura one is because it’s empty

Before using these shampoos, my scalp would get oily by 3pm on the same day even when I have washed my hair in the morning. Now, I can probably have my next wash in the evening the next day. If you compare these shampoos to your drugstore brands like Pantene and Dove, you’ll find them pricey. However, drugstore brands weigh down my hair, and most of them actually worsen my hair loss. Hence, I HAVE to spend more on shampoos to keep the hair on my scalp. When my scalp is greasy, I find that I lose more hair. That’s why I need to keep my scalp healthy and grease free. These have been pretty good so far. Truthfully, I can’t choose which one I love most. All of them have their own strengths and weakness, some pricier, some control oil better and some keep my hair softer, but on average, the Philip B one is more of an all rounder. I will be trying out the Kerastase Densifique range, something to help with hair density, and I’ll report back how I like it.

If you have a head full of hair, even though it’s frizzy and unmanageable, count your blessings. It is definitely better than NOT having enough hair on your scalp. Pregnancy has been kind to me because I’m keeping most of my hair, but I know my hair will start to fall by the second or third month after delivery. Fingers crossed, these shampoos will help me out. Do you have problems with your hair? Do you have any recommendations for me? I’m all ears and hair

xoxo Lily
