[Event] 1. Mai street festival in Berlin

1. Mai street festival in Berlin (Photo story)
1. Mai is the International worker's day but every country has it's own history connected to this day and every country celebrates it differently. I remember back in Russia when I was a kid Mayday stand for freedom, equality and revolution. The entire city was covered with red flags and colorful balloons. My mom knotted an enormously big red ribbon in my hair and my brothers took me to see the worker's parade.
1. Mai in Germany is called Labour Day and it's one of the few non religious holidays we get to celebrate. But it is also the most violent holiday in the country because of the riots and street fights between socialist/anarchist groups and the police. Especially in Berlin-Kreuzberg it came to extremly violent clashes. But in the last 10 years the intensity of violence has decreased considerably. At some point the Berlin police decided to change their tactic and started to support alternative events, such as the street festival Myfest, which takes place in district SO 36, the traditional center of the riots. If you have thousands of peaceful attendees with kids and dogs, who are dancing, singing and eating, who would dare to throw a Molotov cocktail into policemen's car.
