Milimbo: Pulgarcito

It seems as if almost every publisher is at the Frankfurt Book Fair right now, but there are still some publishing houses with novelties to promote beyond the world's largest book fair. Last year in October I wrote about their lovely book Cinderella, now Spain studio/publisher Milimbo released another great picture book telling a fairy tale in pictures without text. It's Tom Thumb by Charles Perrault and it comes with a map folded and placed in the back where Tom Thumb's silhouette becomes a labyrinth and a little figure of Tom helps us to walk into the labyrinth and find the exit. The intense and impressive illustrations are by Giovanna Ranaldi who used mainly the "esgrafiado" technique (sgraffito) to visualize the dark story with a happy end.

Charles Perrault/Giovanna Ranaldi: Pulgarcito, 32 pages, € 18.00, Milimbo 2013
