Review: Hotel Baia Verde Catania

When my mother-in-law instigated the holiday to celebrate her birthday, we had a family pow-wow. Italy was set as our general destination, with Rome, Pompeii and Sicily as options to go to. For Sicily, we ended up going to Palermo first, and Catania next.

For our stay in Catania I approached my friends at Snap Traveller*. They hooked me up with two nights at this brilliant 4-star hotel on the coast of Catania.

Take a look.

*In a nutshell? A blogger or “online influencer” goes “Hey, can I go to this hotel on your list?” and then Snap Traveller sees if the hotel has a room available. And then you write about it and tell your readers and followers you were there.

The Baia Verde Hotel is right on the coast line and you can tan both on the terrace near the pool as the cliff side solarium. You can swim in the sea as well as the swimming pool. I’m not sure which water was clearer.

From the breakfast room and its balcony you had an amazing view over the ocean. What a way to wake up.

DAT BED DOE.

Bliss.

The hotel room was lovely. For one thing, the shower was so big and accessible that I was able to shower without needing any assistance, which was very nice after two weeks of supervised showering.

And Will and I are obsessed with that bed – Apparently the brand is Dorelan and it was amazing. We slept like angels.

Not to mention we were very impressed by the hotel’s hospitality: The staff was stern-looking but friendly, when I had lunch there by myself the waitress was very nice to me and when I asked for a late check-out (we only needed to get to the airport at 5) that was no problem at all – we checked out at 3.

Although Will did go to Edna* one day, the rest of time we did not leave the hotel.

There could have been a fire breathing dragon juggling goblins in the city centre and I would have NO idea: I was taking long showers, naps in perfect beds, reading sessions in the sun and wine with my mother in law while the sun set.

And another really important reason we did not leave the hotel?

Squid and shrimp salad with lemon and olive oil.

Strawberry cake with pistachios

Bresoala with caprese kebabs and cheese with balsamic

Pasta filled with pumpkin in parmesan cheese sauce

Pork medaillon with pineapple and coffee butter (!!!!!)

Tuna kebab roasted with sesame seeds and orange, topped with red onion jam

The lemon cake that may not have looked like much, but which was the most best lemon cake I had in my life and that I ordered twice and regret not having ordered more

The food in the restaurant?

Nothing short of amazing. You didn’t need to go anywhere and find another restaurant because the food here was so good.

They changed the menu every day, with about 5 options for a first course and 5 options for a second course, and they had a dessert trolley. Everything was delicious (including the wine – also important).

Honesty bids me to tell you I was disappointed in two things: One, the reception gives a bad first impression of such a beautiful hotel. It looks so much shabbier than the rest of the hotel.

And after the first day’s lunch and dinner I expected more from the breakfast buffet, but that was all very generic and low quality. Bad coffee and bad bacon, man. That fucked me up. But no worries: I just ate pastries and canned peaches for breakfast and waited until it would be lunchtime again.

You can find the Grand Hotal Baia Verde Catania on Booking.com, where it has a well-deserved rating of an 8.3.

Thank you Snap Traveller for allowing me to stay here with my family and thank you hotel Baia Verde for your hospitality.

*I texted my friend that Will went to Edna and he went “IS THAT WILL’S SIDE BITCH?! BECAUSE I WILL BREAK HIS SKULL” because he didn’t know it was a volcano and I laughed so hard it almost broke another ankle.
