The Blokes Guide – Laundry 101

We’ve all been there. You try to help with the laundry and end up turning the expensive white sheet set, pink. While you have many endearing qualities, the ability to do a disaster-free load of laundry isn’t necessarily one of them. So in an effort to give you a giggle and a few “How To” laundry hints, we’ve come up with our Top 5 Laws of Laundry… this should keep you out of trouble.

1.Invest in a Divided Laundry Hamper

The bathroom or bedroom floor is not the clothes hamper. Nor does a laundry fairy arrive each evening to pick up the days clothing from the bathroom or bedroom floor. When you undress, place all dirty clothing into a divided laundry hamper and sort into lights, darks and delicate as you go! Now would also be the time to read the washing/drying instructions on any clothing that you’re unsure of. Throwing a ‘dry clean only’ garment into a hot washing machine cycle or clothes dryer is not going to end well for anyone.

2. Use cold water where possible & limit your load.

Don’t automatically set the machine to the hot cycle because you will automatically shrink some clothing. Select the cold cycle and use Ecozone Eco Balls. You will save on money, energy consumption, the environment and the cost of your partner’s ruined top. And how will you know if you’ve overloaded the washing machine you ask? It begins shaking and bouncing around the laundry, oh and it will stop mid cycle. Washing machines are not built to bounce. Limit your load.

3. Use a quality Airer

Washing is only part of the process. You need to dry (and fold/iron/distribute) your clean clothing. Remove clothes immediately once the washing machine has finished its cycle. Leave them there for too long and your clothes will go mouldy. Mould is not a friend. Don’t just throw everything into the dryer though; invest in a quality airer to save money on your energy bills, to give Mother Nature a much-needed break and to extend the life of your clothes.

4. Allocate a Distribution Basket for each person

Once your clothes are dry, they need to be folded and put away. A distribution basket for each family member will streamline the process and save you valuable time. If you leave your dry-unfolded-clothes in a crumpled mess in a washing basket they will all require ironing. Remember that laundry fairy that doesn’t exist? There is also no ironing fairy.

5. Repeat steps 1-5 multiple times a week.
