Snapshot 08.06.14

- I’m still getting over last week’s bladder infection. I’m not sure if this is true for most Crohn’s sufferers, but in my case the treatment for infections seems to be as bad as the disease. I’m really sensitive to antibiotics now and as long as I take them I am extremely dizzy and nauseated. It’s certainly slowing me down, but it’s not stopping me. I would appreciate it if we could go a few months without anyone being direly sick. That would just be great.

- Elias hasn’t been sick recently (thank the sweet babby Picard jesus) but he did have some extremely fussy days after the last round of vaccinations. Which is normal and not at all a surprise since we’ve gone through all this with Isobel. It’s new to Isobel herself, though, and she’s trying to be understanding of his whining but she’s just not used to it. During a particularly long, fussy afternoon, Isobel created a lullaby to help calm him down. It was primarily her singing “Just pass out and go to sleep.” In fact, she named it “Just Pass Out and Go To Sleep,” something I wish I could do right now.

- My kids really have the best grandparents. On both sides. They have both pitched in to make sure Isobel has had a summer full of swimming lessons, and more recently, enrollment in a reading readiness program. It’s at our local university and as it’s Mommy & Me, I attend with her. She starts school in roughly two weeks (!!!) and I can’t join her there, so I feel like this is a great transition toward that. We’ve only just started the program so far but we really love it. Isobel is thrilled to have homework, a feeling which isn’t going to be with her much longer, I’m sure.

- My Dad fond a couple of undeveloped rolls of film while cleaning out his office and took them in for processing. Turns out one of the rolls was photos I took of Anthony and my first apartment all decorated for Christmas. I wish I would have taken more photo of the place.

- Further evidence of how awesome her grandparents are: Grandpa Doug does his best to stay abreast of all the current Isobel trends. He researched flower fairies when Isobel was in her fairy house stage, and now that she’s moved on to Pokemon, he’s been googling them, too, so he can understand what the hell she’s talking about when she comes over and then play along.

- A new thrift store opened up in town! I’m so excited. It moved into the building my favorite thrift store used to occupy until it closed its doors last year. It has lots of potential. We visited it as a family last weekend and I was so excited about it that the day before we went I had a dream Goodwill decided to modernize and change its name to TRINKETZ. I picked up a few things for Elias’ nursery, which I’m actually starting to work on. Our friend Jacob’s grandmother recently had a garage sale and in addition to some choice treasures I nabbed a gorgeous green-gold velour chair for his room that all of the cats have taken turns sitting and napping in.

- A year or so ago we swooped up a telescope from Anthony’s Grandma’s garage sale and we’ve finally been busting it out to check out the night sky in our backyard. It’s not ideal, of course, because we live in town and are subject to vast amounts of light pollution, but it’s been so fun to go out there with the kids on a moment’s notice and check out the sky. It’s not a super fancy telescope but even so the moon looks amazing through it, like watching a movie on the moon in HD, except is the actual fucking moon. I tried to take a photo of what I saw through the telescope with my phone camera. Nailed it! Anthony declared it was impossible, so of course I’m going to keep trying.

- Our friends an guardian angels Bri and Norcross sent us their old computer for Isobel to fart around on, which of course dovetails nicely with our reading program and the impending start of school. We can’t thank you guys enough!
