Blue Balayage Hair - How to get ombre at home with hair chalk

Similar to my girl Miley, I Can't Stop. While my vices aren't repackaging black dance culture for a mainstream white audience and showing the haters that I'm SEXY and CAREFREE, Y'ALL (okay, maybe a little of that), I do have a slight addiction to balayage and ombre hair styling. I've gone pink, purple, pink/orange/purple, and pink again, and still want MOAR.

Fudge Urban has recently brought out their own range of hair chalk, so obviously there was not way I could resist the sweet siren call of Elektrik Blue (but seriously, that spelling needs to die in a fire).

Yeah, no way I was letting an AD reference slip by me

The Fudge Urban Colour differs from the Kevin Murphy Color Bugs in a few ways - it's a slightly smaller 4 grams, rather than 4.8 grams, but is also cheaper at A$9.99 (or $5.99 at Priceline right now!) compared to Color Bugs at $24.95. I also found it a physically harder product, that took a few more goes overs to build up. That said, it also had less fall out than the Color Bugs, although it did stain my hands the exact same amount, i.e. a lot.

Want to give it a go? Here's a few tips I suggest you try before saucing up your hair (with the hair chalk, not like actual sauce. Please don't put Heinz in your hair.)

Before

-Wear an old top. Don't wear whatever fancy dress or whatever you are planning to wear out that day. It will get its shit fucked up seven ways if you do. The towel over your shoulders can work, but then ou kind of just spend the entire application time trying to shrug a slipping towel back up without touching it with your fingers. Plus you'll need your towel for the next bit.

- Put a towel across your bathroom sink, vanity, wherever you're applying the product for easy clean-up. Remember that water makes the chalk extra clingy and is a huge jerk to scrub out of your sink.

- Prep hair with a spray of dry shampoo. It will help the chalk bond to your strands meaning you will both use less product and have less fall out. Winner!

During

- To achieve the faded ombre look, I take small sections of hair and brush the dome hard against the very ends, before working the pigment up the hair and sheering it out at the mid lengths. I also twist strands to deepen the colour in sections.

- Spritz hair with water before applying chalk for an amped-up colour. Be warned - doing this can stain light hair like mine, although it will only take an additional shampoo or two to remove all traces.

After

- I give my hair a bit of a shake to remove any loose pigment, then give it the once over with a healthy amount of hairspray. This will help seal it on the strands, rather than your clothes, car seat, cat.

-Your ends will be pretty fricking dry as chalk draws out moisture, so use a conditioning spray on them during the day to quell their thirst . This is my new favourite.

One squishy wink later, and we're done!
