Rhyming Books that You Can SING!

Have you ever noticed that music and literacy have such a strong connection? That might be odd to hear because usually it’s music and math. But just think about all the fun ways that music and lyrics play with sounds in words. It really is a fascinating idea and one that could compose another post entirely.

Including rhyming songs in your normal routine is a great way to combine the foundational rhyming skills of reading and music. Reading books that you can sing, too is another. Today, we’re featuring some our of favorite rhyming books that you can not only READ with your child, but SING.

Rhyming Books that You Can SING!

Flies? Yummy? They are in this fun and silly rhyming book and song, Five Green and Speckled Frogs. Get ready for some giggles!

Get ready to test your memory and knowledge of animal noises with Cat Goes Fiddle-i-fee. I’ll admit it, my kids can remember the sounds better than I can!

Who Took the Cookies from the Cookie Jar is a counting favorite. Kids love to have their own names inserted into the song as well. It’s also fun to sing with real cookies or pretend cookies!

Five Little Ducks is a fun book to read and sing while kids are in the bathtub playing with rubber ducks. It’s also a fun one to act together, taking turns being the mama duck and baby ducklings.

I have yet to meet a child who doesn’t absolutely fall head over heels in love with this book or this song {by Raffi}. Seriously hilarious to sing. You can also make up your own rhymes and verses to Down by the Bay.

There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly is a favorite of mine from childhood, although I like to change the lyrics to say, “Oh me! Oh my!” instead of “Perhaps she’ll die.”

You might remember singing The Lady with the Alligator Purse as child, but you don’t know this version! What cures Tiny Tim? Believe it or not…pizza!

Your nature lovers will like to read and sing Over in the Meadow, illustrated by Ezra Jack Keats. I like to sing this one and ask the child to fill in the missing number/rhyming word.

Chicka, Chicka Boom Boom has more of a sing-songy/skat-type feel to words. We do know and sing the song that Scholastic created, which you can find on YouTube {at least the last time I checked}.

Who can resist Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed? It’s so fun to act out {any floor surface will do; even the trampoline} and chant or sing together.

My mom got my kids hooked on this song. And I was thrilled when I discovered the board book, You Are My Sunshine. It is a current favorite of my toddler.

Rain, Rain Go Away is another favorite song of my kids. They really enjoy the Super Simple Songs version on YouTube. And my youngest enjoys the book, too!

On Top of Spaghetti is another book/song that is SURE to bring smiles to kids’ faces. As a childhood favorite of mine, I am sad to see it is so difficult to find a book in print that has the lyrics to the song.

Miss Mary Mack is another one of those chants that is not truly a song, but is sing-songy and fun to recite and read together.

More Rhyming Books You Can Sing

  • Piggyback Songs: Just for Fun is the re-make of the older Piggyback books I used when I taught music. The tunes are familiar and the new lyrics are easy for young children to relate to.
  • Take Me Out of the Bathtub- older kids will enjoy the silliness of Alan Katz’ poetry, set to familiar tunes
  • Miss Mary Mack & Anna Banana are fun sing-songy chants that kids will love to recite {and even recite when they jump rope!}
