DIY Chalkboard Yarn Bowl - Great for Pet Owners

Are you are yarnie? Have you been drooling over the gorgeous yarn bowls? If you are not a crocheter, knitter, or yarn enthusiast, you probably have no idea what I am talking about. Check out these gorgeous pottery ones for sale from Blue Room Pottery Etsy Shop.

Well, as usual, I was at my local Goodwill, saw and item, and thought, "yarn bowl".

Yup, I saw this discarded coffee pot for just $1.00 and had an "a-ha" moment. You see, the idea of a lid appeals to me because I have dogs. My thought is that with a lid, my dogs won't be as apt to want to play with the ball of yarn.

So, I found coffee pot but how was I going to turn it into something that I wouldn't mind sitting next to my knitting chair.

SPRAY PAINT!!

Before I continue, I must admit that I have a problem.....a patience problem. Once I get an idea in my head for a project, I can't wait for it to be finished so I can enjoy what I've created. If you are like me, check out your spray paint labels. Take a look below. See, the pink paint dries in 10 minutes! That means I don't have to wait FOREVER for the paint to dry between coats. YAY!

First, you need to disassemble your coffee pot and wash AND rinse each piece well. Don't be intimidated, it comes apart easily. I just needed a phillips screwdriver.

Now it's time to paint. Always spray paint in a well ventilated area. I spray paint outside. I applied 3 coats of each paint (chalkboard to the glass piece and pink to the other pieces).

Now, you may be wondering what will happen with the painted areas on the glass pot. Will you see them? Well, here's a photo of the inside and outside of the front of my pot. There's no trace of any lettering.

Now here's the hard part. Here is the waiting part. Yes, you need to wait 24 hours before you can prep your "chalk board". It's also good for the pink parts to "cure" 24 hours. This will ensure the paint has bonded well.

Once you've waited 24 hours, reassemble your coffee pot. Looking good, don't you think?

Now it's time to prep the chalkboard. Using the side, rub a piece of chalk all over your coffee pot.

Okay, it's show time! Place some yarn in your pot and start knitting, crocheting.....CREATING!

See, with the spout, you can store your work, on needles, inside your bowl and the lid keeps pesky pets out!

I'm still drooling over all the beautiful yarn bowls but I'm loving this "lidded" version. Also, with the chalkboard area, I can make notes of the pattern repeat or which row I'm on!
