Creating A Teens Black & White Movie Themed Bedroom

Ty has been begging me for months to change his room. I can't blame him a bit. The original room was two different shades of blue paint- complete with glitter- and horrible glossy blue trim. It really was a nightmare but it worked okay when he was younger. And truthfully I just didn't want to tackle painting over all that mess- the previous owner not only used glitter paint but she also textured the walls. But it was time to take the room from little boy blue to a more grown up and sophisticated theme.

Ty really wanted a black and white room. That was all the design information he gave me. But then he vetoed every idea I had that incorporated black and white. Finally we agreed on a movie theater theme. I started with the painting. I had to sand every single inch of the walls to get the new paint to adhere to the texture. My arms were ready to fall off. Then it took 2 gallons of white paint to cover up the blue. The trim took 4 coats to cover. Four. Thankfully the black only took 2 coats. The painting was a 2 day process to finish. I even painted the doors black and spray painted the door handles with nickel colored paint.

The difference was amazing! Bye bye blue. Just like in the little kid's room I used black flat sheets instead of curtains. I couldn't find any black sheers that I liked in my price range but these $4 sheets work perfectly. They let the light come in but still give Ty some privacy. I based most of the room around the black and white polka dot rug. I wanted to incorporate the movie theater theme without going overboard. Ty wanted skulls on the wall but I was not so keen on that idea. We compromised with the movie posters of Ghost Rider and The Punisher. Technically they are skulls but they fit the theme of the room. I found all the movie themed metal wall art at Hobby Lobby- I love that place!

I also put a desk in his room so he has a quiet place to do his homework and added a white table beside his bed. The decor ended up being simple, more sophisticated, and perfectly themed. Ty loves that I allowed the black and white decor, and I love that we were able to compromise. It's the perfect movie theater room for a teenager!
