Visiting Kyoto, Japan {Day 2}

After an hour long detour {missed our stop} on the train, we arrived at Fushimi Inari Shrine, known for its thousands of torii gates. The shrine is in a quaint little town with vendors offering traditional Japanese snacks alongside of the narrow road leading up to the shrine.

We began the long hike up and around the shrine underneath the brilliantly colored torii gates. It was breathtakingly beautiful, but with uneven steps and steepness, be sure to wear comfortable shoes, though there were plenty of tea shops at various points to allow visitors to catch their breath.

After the long hike, we made our way to the famous 530 year-old Honke Owariya for the best soba noodles we had ever tasted. The broth, the noodles, everything was cooked to perfection. This is a must visit for anyone visiting Kyoto. It was so good that before we left Kyoto the next day, we went back for a second bowl, right after visiting Nijo Castle with its wooden “nightingale” sounding floors.
