A new running group – Moms Run This Town – MRTT

I’m keeping at my search for a running group. While there really wasn’t anything majorly wrong with the first group that my running buddy and I found, it really didn’t seem like a good fit. First, they met too early for us and second, there was that language issue that just made it so that K and I were going to run with each other anyway.

I have so many blogger friends that have Moms Run This Town running groups and while I know I searched out a local group a year or so ago to no avail, I decided to look again.

And, I found one! Well, a very fledgling, rather inactive group, but there’s a little life to it. First, I connected with them on Facebook and then I received an invitation from the leader of the group that she created a group on Meetup.com.

Both she and I sent out invitations to a few additional friends and we wound up with a group of 6 for our first Saturday morning run. It was a great turnout!!! We met at a local park and after introductions, we decided on a 3 mile run and to meet back if anyone got separated. There were a few different paces in the group, but everyone was comfortable with a Galloway type interval plan.

Turns out, not only is the main organizer a parent at my son’s school, but she’s also one of my volunteer docents for the Healthy Ever After program! Small world. I hadn’t ever met her in person and while her email address seemed familiar to me, I kept forgetting to look up why it was familiar. She’s a super nice person and a very experienced runner and she runs just about MY PACE! I’m so excited.

Last weekend I wasn’t able to make the group run as I was playing in the mud, but they planned to meet at a different park.

I was able to make it to the run this weekend. I knew from the RSVPs on Meetup.com that is was going to just be me and the main organizer. (shoot, her name is also a K… maybe I’ll call her K2?). We had a great run together.

Two challenges for me – K2 runs exactly at my pace, I’m not used to having someone run at a pace that I can really try out the ‘talk test’ while running. It was a different experience. I felt a little out of shape for a while while I was trying to talk while huffing and puffing. I even got a bit of a side ache during the run. I know this is good – I guess I need to work on my breathing.

Second challenge: where did all the other ladies go? K2 told me that a few people had RSVPd to make the run last weekend, but no one showed up. :-( At least this time, no one had RSVPd that they’d be there other than the 2 of us. I know life is busy… maybe I’ll go onto the group and suggest some different times to meet.

The best part about K2 is that she’s up for meeting for evening runs during the week. Okay, there’s lots of good things about her, but this is a bonus. So, she’s going to meet me one night this week to squeeze in a 45 minute run while Dude is at soccer practice. She’s a brave soul who will have her 4 year old in a stroller and her 8 year old will actually run with us. They’ve done a few 5Ks together and he likes to run. How awesome is that?

Any suggestions how to get this group going? The women who came out to that first run were really nice and it seems like there’s potential for a good group. Those of you that are part of a MRTT chapter, how do you organize your group runs? Have your groups been meeting for a while? Was the beginning rough?

A random picture from a run a few weekends ago – the sunrise on a quiet street.
It’s like a little gift when you get a beautiful view while out on a morning run.
