Dear Future Husband (#dearfuturehusband edition)

Hey, you!

Yeah, you! My future husband. I want to tell you a story.

Awhile back I noticed a trend start to form on Twitter and Pinterest with the hashtag #dearfuturehusband. It was kind of nagging of the future husband and was filled with requests for the type of ring a woman may want or how they would like to be treated in the future. This didn’t fit with my newly formed Christian view of marriage and so I reclaimed the hashtag. Literally. If you could legally own a hashtag, I own it.

I started to write these letters to you with ideas about how things might work in our future marriage. When you read through them, some of them do have expectations. For the most part though, my letters are different from a lot of the tweets about the topic. What is really cool is that there are other Christians who have started to use this hashtag.

In the meantime, it has become a popular culture thing. And so a song was written about it by Meghan Trainor Dear Future Husband – Title. Here is the video with the lyrics:

I’ll admit I relate to some of the things she says in the video. The problem is that she focuses on what YOU would do and barely mentions what she would do for you. In the biblical version of marriage, it really isn’t a lot about what you’ll get out of it. It is about giving 100% of yourself to the other person, even if they don’t give it back. It’s literally insane to the world. So while she has it right that you should be focused on serving me, my focus is on preparing myself to serve you.

Love,
Liz
