Evolu Balancing Day Cream: A Lightweight Moisturiser for Daily Use

I was contacted by theSkintopic, a privately-owned company carrying a variety of New Zealand-made brands, asking if I’d be interested in trying a skincare line from Evolu. When they offered to send me a couple of products, I immediately said “yes” because I’ve been having quite a bit of luck with these natural/organic skincare stuff recently.

Evolu was brought into Malaysia sometime mid 2013 and was founded by Kati Kasza, who was born into a family of Hungarian emigres to New Zealand. Growing up with a botanist mother and a winemaker father, she acquired an appreciation of using quality plant extracts and the art of blending them. Many of the key ingredients used in her skincare line are derived from plants native to New Zealand.

The packaging (made of recyclable material) comes in a simple tube. I do prefer products that are housed in tubes as opposed to glass jars or bottles because they are easier to travel with. But one thing with squeezy tubes is that you need to be a little careful because there is a tendency to over-squeeze.

This day cream is meant for normal/combination skin types. The cream itself is white in colour and has a gel-like quality. It spreads easily and absorbs fairly quick. I initially thought it may be too heavy as a day cream but after it sinks into skin, it feels like nothing on my face. I just need a tiny dollop to keep my face comfortable and moisturised.

The scent is absolutely lovely but that’s only because I like herbal plant smells. If you’re not a fan, you probably won’t appreciate the scent as much. The key ingredients in the Balancing Day Cream are Kiwifruit, Blackcurrant and Meadowfoam, which are meant to control, regulate and hydrate your skin. But I think it smells predominantly of Meadowfoam only because I had a shampoo made with the same ingredient and they smell similar.

I must say I am impressed with this day cream. I am exposed to air-conditioning nearly all day and my skin tends to get rather dry. But the day cream has managed to keep my oily t-zone in check whilst maintaining some moisture on the rest of my face. So the “balancing” bit in its namesake is pretty much true.

I have been using the day cream for 3 weeks almost daily (usually in the mornings underneath sunscreen) and have not suffered any adverse effects. I like it for what it is, a natural daytime moisturiser that helps my skin feel comfortable. Each 75ml tube costs RM232 and yes, it is definitely a splurge. But I reckon one tube will last you a while because you don’t need that much each time. I estimate my tube to last a good 6 to 9 months with regular use.

Have you tried anything from Evolu and are you into natural skincare brands? I have been loving some of the stuff from New Zealand lately and am glad that I can add this fantastic range to my list too.
