A Do and A Do Not

What a fun filled weekend!

The weather has finally turned summer-like and we took full advantage of it. Can it stay like this forever?

In the process I learned a running DO and a DO NOT.

Saturday morning, Miss A. and I had a great time volunteering at the Girls on the Run 5k. We spray painted the hair of the girls, moms, and even some dads. It was fantastic to see the support the girls had from their teammates, coaches, friends and family. I loved that even a few dads wore fairy wings to support their team! Miss A thought that was very funny.

Our next assignment was at water stop #1. Even though I’ve run plenty of races, I’ve never paid attention to the set up of water stops. I always just ran by and there were people handing out cups. I’ve got a new respect for anyone who works water stops. We got bombarded all at once. It was a mad house for 10 minutes of arms, water jugs, cups and hot, sweaty runners. And then complete quiet. As the last group left, we all just looked at each other like, “Whoa! What just happened?”

I was thrilled to be a small part of such a great organization and event. The lessons the girls learn are so vital at that age. Hearing the stories from some of the coaches made me tear up. I’d love to be a coach but it just doesn’t jive with my work schedule at this time. Maybe one day. Until then, I’ll just have to volunteer as much as I can.

I definitely encourage everyone – DO volunteer!

Later in the day, I met up with friends for a long run. By then, it was 80 degrees and sunny. Summer running is definitely back. It was one of those things that we all kind of knew it wasn’t the best idea but we had it planned and we’re just going to go with it. We tried for a mostly shady route but it didn’t help much. I’m not complaining at all but it was HOT! We took walk breaks often and just slogged our way through 10 miles. I definitely was ill prepared with only a small handheld water bottle and no refilling options on the route. It’s been so long but I think I need a refresher on what to do for summer running!

Lesson learned – DO NOT go out for a long run on the first hottest day of summer at 1 p.m. with little water.

Despite feeling wiped out for the rest of the day (and wanting only to eat fro yo and tortilla chips), it still was all good since I had marvelous company! (I’m linking up with Katie for more MIMM).

Your turn -

Share a DO or DO NOT that you’ve learned recently!
