IRONING BOARD MAKEOVER & TUTORIAL

After 37 years of devoted service, I thought it was about time to give my old ironing board a makeover.

Take a look how this old girl has aged over three decades!
I've made many covers over the years, but this time I decided to spray paint those legs along with a sewing a new cover. Poor girl, she really needed some help!

I think this bright orange dress (fabric from JoAnne Fabrics) will breathe some new life into her. The poor thing has been through a lot and I'm thinking if I take good care of her, she will probably out live me...what do you think?
I'm sure there are better tutorials out there for covering an ironing board, but this is how I have made mine over the years.

I used almost two yards of fabric for my ironing board. First thing I do is to lay out the fabric and draw a chalk line about 4 inches from the board.

After cutting the fabric along the chalk line, I fold the edge over (2 times) using a 5/8 inch measurement each time to make a casing to feed the elastic through.

Before sewing the casing I pressed the fabric so it will lay flat more easily.

I sewed a 1/2 inch seam all along the edge, but left a 3 inch opening at the large end of the ironing board to be able to feed the elastic through.

I like using large safety pins and a 1/8 inch soft stretch elastic to feed into the casing.

Once the elastic has been fed through, I like to use another safety pin to secure it before pulling the elastic and drawing it to fit around the ironing board. Then all I do is tie it in a bow and tuck it under the cover so it can't be seen.
Once the cover was finished, I removed it and took the old gal outside to spray paint her legs. The color I used was Rust-Oleum's EDEN Green.

This floral picture on my wall was the inspiration for the colors I used to give this old gal a face lift.

She is no longer a wallflower that blends into my craft room!
