Rainy Days and Mondays Always Get Me Down

As the old Carpenters’ song goes, “Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.”

Not really.

Fridays are my favorite day of the week; but Mondays don’t really bother me. I’m happy to have been given another day to live, laugh, and serve.

You too?

Growing up in the late 1960’s and early 70’s, I loved (and still love) the songs of Richard and Karen Carpenter.

Monday’s aren’t bad days by default; however, today was somewhat of a double-whammy kind of day. And it may not end well, either.

Read on.

If you’re not familiar with the Carpenters, here’s the tune I’m referring to today:

Matt had a tough time getting to sleep last night. At one o’clock this morning he visited my bedside to ask if he could have a NyQuil so he could fall asleep.

Um. No. Not a good choice, dude.

Instead, I offered to climb in bed with him and pat his back — a ritual that has worked since he was a little tike. (He’ll be fourteen in a couple months. Oy!)

He took me up on the offer.

I patted and rubbed his back and prayed that he’d go to sleep. It didn’t take very long and he was out. Rather than take the chance of waking him up, I stayed.

And quickly fell asleep.

It was about four o’clock this morning when I awoke. I carefully crawled out of Matt’s bed and made my way back to my own. The alarm would be going off in an hour.

While it’s wonderful to sleep in on the weekends, if my wife and I allow Matt to sleep too late, then we’re all in trouble the next day.

We know Matt needs a good amount of sleep. He is growing and the adolescent phase of his life is kicking in hard. He’s a full head taller than his mother. And he’s just as tall, perhaps an inch taller, than I am. It’s a crazy thing.

Our gene pool lacks the ‘tall’ chromosome, so I’m not sure where he’s getting the height.

There needs to be a happy medium between ‘sleeping all day’ and ‘getting-up-with-the-chickens’ on Saturdays and Sundays.

That will be a topic of conversation for this evening as we commute to and from his snare drum lesson.

By that time (eight o’clock) he’ll be ultra-tired and super-crabby, for sure.

I can’t wait. : )
