Girl Crushing It | Heidy Best

I met Heidy Best at my very first Chicago Blogger Network happy hour. Immediately after striking up conversation, I decided to stalk her for the rest of the night. There are some people in this world whose aura sucks you in – Heidy is one of them. She’s clever, full of laughter, and my ideal blend of positivity and snarky humor. You can’t ignore an independent woman who started a business (BECLOTHESMINDED) based on what she loves – clothes and people. I really need to make her hang out with me regularly.

Set up an appointment with Heidy on her website and follow her on Facebook to get notice of events and great sales at her favorite stores, Instagram to see style through her keen eyes, and Twitter because she has great taste.

Finally! A ginger girl crush!

When someone asks you what you do, what do you say?

I own BECLOTHESMINDED, a wardrobe styling firm based in Chicago.

When did you decide to start your business?

I started shopping and organizing closets for other clients 13 years ago. I was still doing it on the side while I was working for Neiman Marcus and then Emporio Armani. Those experiences helped me to grow and realize my real passion was working with clients directly regardless of their budget, lifestyle, etc. Last Summer I took the leap and went on my own with the support of my husband and clients and I’m not looking back.

If you never had to work again, how would you spend your time?

I would start incorporating yoga and pilates into my daily routine. I would for sure travel the world and fall in love with new places meeting new people.

What annoys you the most?

your vs you’re (you know what I’m saying).

How do you deal with disappointment?

Not very well.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

If not now, when?

What’s the craziest thing you’ve learned so far?

Even a t-shirt with holes in it can be hard for someone to give up.

Do you see a common theme in your customers?

Yes, they’re all amazing.

What’s your favorite thing to spend money on?

Bracelets, shoes, and handbags.

Which category do you fall in: girls with weddings planned before they have a fiancé, or girls who wing it?

Girl who winged it. I’m extremely quick and deliberate in most of my decision-making, but especially when it comes to fashion.

Is there one item every woman should have in her closet?

Nude shoes.

What is your good hair day secret?

Griffith Parc Salon – $25 blowouts what?!

What is your bad hair day secret?

Not being able to get into Griffith Parc Salon.

What’s your favorite lipstick?

I am more of a lip gloss gal. Anything by Tom Ford, Laura Mercier, and Bobbie Brown.

How do you get over a low self-esteem day?

I start almost every weekday at Shred415. Everyone is cheering you on. I always feel better when I walk out of that class.

If you could go back in time, what would you tell a teenage you?

Save every penny from your high school job you’re going to need it when you first move to Chicago.

You speak to women about loving their figures, how did that become a passion?

My clients get pretty honest when they’re with me. A lot of what I was hearing was “I wish I was a size 4 still”, or if she was a size 2 she didn’t like her arms and it made me sad because I thought wow if you’re not happy with your body what hope do I have? I started to say “hey snap out of it. You’re beautiful inside and out”. It’s important for women and men to understand that if everyone was supposed to look the same way we would.

What does body positivity mean to you?

Pretend your body is a friend. Would you ever tell your friend that she is too short, or too fat, or maybe that you really don’t like the size of her breasts? I didn’t think so. Be kind to yourself and appreciate that your body can do some pretty amazing things at any size, shape, age, etc.

What do you wish more women would know?

Women need to replace 1-2 of their bras every 6 months. During that shopping trip get fitted because a lot can change in that time frame. The best fitted bras can make women look years younger and believe or not a size smaller.

If you were a stripper, what would be your signature song?

Money Can’t Buy It” by Annie Lennox.
