The Color Run: London 5k

What’s blue, orange, purple, red, yellow and pink all over? That would be me huffing and puffing my way through the 5k Color Run last Sunday! The lovely folks at LivingSocial had asked if I’d like to give it a bash, and seeing as I’m a self-proclaimed trainee runner, I figured it was high time I actually yanked on my trainers and did some running. My partner in crime, Frank, came to cheer me on and we got merrily doused in powder paint from head to toe.

For those of you who haven’t heard of the Color Run (and also think I’m a bad editor for using the American spelling ‘color’), this is a 5k run labelled ‘the happiest 5k on the planet'. Runners jog, walk or dance the route, and are doused in different coloured powder paint at each 1k marker. Dressed in our crisp white t-shirts, sweat bands and race numbers, we hopped on the tube to Wembley. Before the run, Frank and I caught up with the lovely LivingSocial bunch, along with a team of bloggers, before making our way to the start line.

The sun was shining, The energy was amazing. People of all ages and backgrounds were in high spirits, eager to get going and soak up the atmosphere.

It goes without saying that we got positively covered. Each paint station focuses on a different colour, and as we approached the first 1k marker, runners disappeared into a giant cloud of bright pink. Volunteers armed with containers of powder hurled paint all over us and we soldiered on to the next paint station.

We made it to the finish line in one piece, and were handed paint packs to hurl into the air (and at each other).

After the race, we popped down to a local pub to have some food and a natter about our amazing experience. After a couple of hours we headed home, filthy and happy, making a concerted effort not to get paint all over the tube seats (and our cream carpets at home!) After a well-earned shower and an early night, I was still buzzing the next day. A perfectly mucky way to spend a Sunday and get some colour into your life. Thank you LivingSocial!
