Once upon a time: The Burberry Check (hi)story
Everybody should know about how the most famous tartan fabric in the whole fashion world was born, and now I’m going to tell you the story about the legendary Burberry check, or, you know, just trying.
Once upon a time, during the 19th century when the trench coat was created by Thomas Burberry for the former time throughout the first world war, it appeared also his particular lining.
Who knew if he was conscious about the big invention he was making, and not only a simple rain coat for the UK military army.
While during years and years the gabardine moved from the battlefields to the runways, expanding and transforming itself, the check fabric upgraded its position from basic liner to the symbol of Burberry house. In fact, it became the print as we know it just few years later, in 1920 when the business began to rise.
Nowadays, the camel, black, red and white pattern has developed several variations, just changing a little bit the plaid shades, turning into black and white or metallic colors for example.
From rain coat to accessory, we are not talking about an ordinary decoration. Burberry check will be the one and only tartan pattern for ever and after. No doubts about it.

Sembra scontato eppure non tutti sono a conoscenza di come la stampa a quadri più famosa del mondo, della moda e non, sia arrivata a ricoprire il ruolo che ha oggi.
Durante il 19 secolo, grazie all’opera ed all’ingegno di Thomas Burberry, fece la sua prima apparizione quello che noi oggi conosciamo benissimo come trench,il soprabito in gabardine per eccellenza, seguito a ruota dalla sua fodera interna.
Chissà se, col senno di poi, il sig. Burberry aveva predetto che quello che stava creando sarebbe andato ben oltre un semplice cappotto per i soldati inglesi, diventando invece l’indumento da pioggia preferito da centinaia e centinaia di persone. Altro che semplice divisa militare.
Per quanto riguarda la famigerata fantasia check, la sua apparizione ufficiale risale al 1920, quando per la prima volta è comparsa assieme al trench con il layout che conserva tutt’oggi, passando da semplice rivestimento interno e un po’nascosto a emblema unico ed iconico del brand stesso.
Nel frattempo,col passare degli anni, il trench ne ha fatta di strada, coronando la sua ascesa al successo passando con nonchalance dai campi di battaglia alle passerelle, evolvendosi e modificandosi con stile, pur restando fedele alla sua identità.
Anche il check ha subito delle piccole variazioni nel suo percorso, seppur non sostanziali, passando dai quadri rossi, beige e bianchi ad alcune alternative che vedevano sempre protagonista la fantasia tartan, semplicemente in nuanches e toni differenti come il bianco ed il nero o, ancora, sfumature metalliche.
Che si tratti di un cappotto o di una borsa, che cambi colore o che si sposti su di una sciarpa , quello di Burberry non è un semplice motivo ripetuto qua e là. Questo pattern resterà nella storia, alzi la mano chi non è d’accordo. (e spido chiunque a dire il contrario).
