Kids in the Kitchen – Fruit Monsters

Get the Kids in the Kitchen to Make Fruit Fun!

“Eat your fruit and vegetables!” How many times did you hear that rally cry from your mom? Did it work? It didn’t make me want any. Apples, corn and potatoes were good in my book but beyond that…nah! Now that my four-year-old son, Sam, has become my kitchen buddy, we talk about a lot of things while we’re working together, including discussions about nutrition. And in general, kids in the kitchen tend to think the food they’ve made is good! So–we’ve been playing with our food in the kitchen, and Sam has opined it’s ALL GOOD!

Kids in the Kitchen – Making Fun Fruit Monsters

We had a lot of fun making these fruit monsters. They’re a cute option for a family meal, but they also work as a healthy kids’ party food option on a dessert table. Of course there are lots of alternatives when you’re making a fruit monster–just decide which fruit (or vegetables) you want your kids to eat and let them create!

We used oranges and raspberries this time around, with just a few chocolate chips. Even though we don’t eat the outside of oranges I like to wash them before we begin our kitchen art. Same thing for the raspberries, but they just get a quick rinse because they don’t like to stay in the water long.

To make these, I cut wedges out of each orange and used the cut out pieces for teeth and hair. I let Sam decide on those artistic expressions! The embellishments are held in place with toothpicks or just the tiniest amount of frosting. Sam is old enough to watch for the toothpicks when he’s eating, but that’s something to be aware of if you’ll have little ones eating these. Chocolate chips are the perfect size to fit in raspberries and they make great eyes, too. You can also use grapes for the eyeballs and give them banana slice cowlicks, but that’s another monster for another day!
