A Reward System for Encouraging Healthy Habits

I know it doesn’t feel like making healthy snacks, brushing little teeth, and filling the hundredth sippy cup is heroic. But it really is! Love for our little ones is in the little things. The mundane, everyday habits that we teach our kids everyday. And LISTERINE® knows it! Now I wouldn’t claim that I “go above and beyond” everyday… but every once in awhile I come up with a way to make our healthy habits and everyday chores a little more fun. Our Simple Coin Reward System

We have been using sticker charts off an on for years to encourage better behavior, healthy habits, and follow-through on chores. I generally allowed the kids to choose one toy once their chart was full, but it seemed like their expectations of how grand that toy would be never lived up to my budget. So in an effort to still reward them while also helping them to understand currency and having a budget, we started a coin reward system instead.

How I Made Our Coin Reward System

This “system” is so simple that it’s barely “bloggable.” I just purchased three small, inexpensive plastic storage containers from the local dollar store. I cut a coin-sized slot in the lid and put a name label on one for each kid. Then I filled one up with a bunch of nickels, dimes, and quarters. When the kids do something that I want to reward, I just let them know which coin to put in their “bank.” And then we count up our coins at the end of the week and go shopping.

How Our Coin Reward System Works

I thought about making a chart to show what they could do to earn each type of coin. But for now I like keeping it open-ended, and I just tell them as we go. I love that I can make bigger chores worth quarters and smaller chores worth less. Which also gives them a better understanding of the worth of the different coins. Here are some examples of chores and healthy habits and what the kids earn for them…

Quarters:

• helping with yard work
• vacuuming
• catching them being kind to their siblings

Dimes:

• setting or clearing the table
• feeding the dog
• brushing their teeth and using their LISTERINE® Smart Rinse

Nickels

• washing hands without being reminded
• saying “please” and “thank you” without being prompted

I know that there might be some controversy about whether some of these tasks and habits should be rewarded or simple expected. But I’ve found this a fun way to encourage better behavior and healthier habits while also teaching the kids about money, too.
