If you follow our adventures on Instagram, you might have seen that we got a chance to visit Mont St Michel this weekend! And it was just as amazing, maybe more, than I had imagined.
I had seen pictures before and heard stories, it sounded amazing. But we were never living close enough to visit. This year when I looked up the distance I remembered it saying 2 1/2 hours. Then when I heard the husband didn’t have a game on Saturday, I knew a family day was in order. Then when I looked it up again to give him directions it said 3 1/2 hours!! Whoops! He wasn’t excited about the drive, but thankfully when we got in the car, passed Nantes & put in the address into our GPS we were pleasantly surprised to only be 2 hours away.
If you don’t know what Mont Saint Michel is and you are a bit interested in history, here’s the Wikipedia page. Basically it’s a big abbey on top of an island that is either surrounded by land or by sea depending on the tide. It was built in as early as the 6th century (couldn’t find the exact date) and has a ton of history. It’s never been concquered due to the unique nature of the tides surrounding it. There was a causeway built in the early 1900′s to allow for visitors and has since become one of the most visited places in France.
Here’s the view from the car window as we pulled up. I was a little excited, but really, can you blame me?
Now I’m going to overload you with pictures because it was so amazing. From a lot of the Instagram comments it seems like quite a few of you have already been there! If you’re ever in France it’s worth the trip if you can.
They were doing construction which is a bummer, but my kids are still cute. And they thought the whole thing was kinda cool! Yay for culture & family fun!
That was a little path we had to walk down. As you can see, he had to turn sideways to make it through!! I didn’t but it still made me very claustrophobic!!
Kinda awesome I get to travel the world with this dude. He even made the trek up after having shots in his Achilles the day before!
Isn’t it amazing, the view? There is a little town close by, but as you can see it’s pretty barren right around there. It’s about 1 kilometer (.60 mile) off the coast. So when the tide comes up, and it comes up pretty fast (12 mph), it’s a legit island! From the top as you view the coast line you can see both Brittany & Normandy which have fought for Mont Saint Michel for a while. It is now considered in Normandy.
Well, if you’re ever in northern France this is a must see!! It’s 3 1/2 hours driving from Paris or you can take a train to Rennes and bus the rest of the way. It’s worth your time!
Have you been to Mont Saint Michel? What was your favorite part?
