Homemade Oil Cleansing Method Face Wash

For some reason, lately I’ve been on this kinda crunchy kick. Maybe it’s the cleanse I’m doing and that I’m only eating whole foods (I haven’t had sugar in 3 weeks!) or maybe it’s the realization that there are so many chemicals in our everyday products, but either way, I kinda like it! A few weeks ago I made some homemade face wash for the oil cleansing method and have been loving it. So it’s only natural I share it with you!

Homemade Oil Cleansing Method Face Wash

I am sure you’ve heard of the oil cleansing method to wash your face. I admit, I thought it was weird too. But it was also intriguing. Would it really wash my face? Would it be able to get my makeup off? How easy is it to make myself? All these things and more came to mind. I figured that the only way to figure them out was to try it!

The best thing about this homemade face wash is how stinkin’ easy it is! Well, that and the cost. And the fact that you know exactly what goes in it. And how awesome those ingredients are. It’s really a power house cleanser!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Coconut Oil (or another carrier oil)
  • Castor Oil
  • Essential Oil of choice (optional. I used Lavender because it’s good for your skin & it’s calming. Perfect for right before bed! It also smells great. You can get 10% off your order by using the code NOUVELLE at checkout!)

The castor oil is the product that carries the dirt, impurities, makeup, etc. away from your skin. It’s also drying so depending on your skin type, use more or less of it. I used 1/3 castor oil to 2/3 carrier oil (in my case, coconut oil). Here’s a quick little graphic to give you an idea of where to start.

Once you have the right amount, combine oils in a glass jar and melt them together by sitting the glass jar in another glass bowl of really hot water, basically making your own double boiler. Once it’s all melted together, add your essential oils of choice , stir and your down! If you’re using an oil like coconut oil that is solid when at lower temps, the mixture will solidify a bit. If not, it still works nicely as a liquid!

*Note: if you will be using this face wash in the morning, it’s good to stay away from citrus essential oils because of how they can make you hypersensitive to the sun. If it’s going to be used only at night, you’re okay!

Why make your own oil cleansing face wash?

I know, it’s not for everyone. It seems a little weird and against the grain. But to know every ingredient that goes into your face product is great. Also these oils have so many good things going for them that you skin will benefit from.

Castor oil: Can keep your skin hydrating and it fights against infections which can help with acne. It also can reduce wrinkles because it stimulates the production of collagen and elastin.

Coconut Oil: It acts as a moisturizer for most skin types and can also delay the appearance of wrinkles or saggy skin.

Lavender Essential Oil: It inhibits bacteria to grow and therefore can heal acne. It can also reduce signs of scarring. Lavender essential oil is also great for helping you sleep!

How do you do the Oil Cleansing Method?

Here’s how I do it. I have my oils already mixed and in the jar shown in the picture. I start with a dry face (makeup or not) and put a little oil on my fingers and start massaging it into my face. I massage for a little while until I feel like it’s all in there. Then I let it sit while I take off my eye makeup with a cotton ball and a little more of the oil mixture on it. Then I put a wash cloth in really hot water and squeeze it out and lay it over my face. This steams your face a little and opens up your pores. I do this once or twice and then on the third time I start to gently wipe off my makeup with the wash cloth. Once I’ve got it all wiped off, I’m done!

I still need a little moisturizing after it’s washed off. I usually just add a little more of the mixture to my face. I’m currently working on a night cream, so hopefully I’ll have that soon.

Now, I’m not a total crunchy girl, but I love the idea of it all. You can’t change your life all at once, and I’m learning to just take baby steps. This is one of my first ones and so far, I love it! My face has been clear and I haven’t had any breakouts! I’ll keep ya posted if things change!

What do you think? Would you ever try the oil cleansing method face wash?
