CHICAGO NEWS

♦ “kick back, enjoy a pint and talk science,” that’s what Shedd Aquarium’s vice president of animal health Dr. Van Bonn hopes that (of age) visitors can partake in. DNAinfo reports that one Wednesday a month, at one of the Aquarium’s weekly “Jazzin’ at the Shedd” events, there will be a “pop-up pub” setup outside the Phelps Auditorium, along with a cash bar.
♦ Chicago based McDonalds Corp and YUM! brands are apologizing after Chinese regulators shut a local meat supplier, following a TV report that showed workers picking up meat from a factory floor, as well as mixing meat beyond its expiration date with fresh meat. This comes 2 years after the 2012 scandal that involved chicken pumped with excessive amounts of antibiotics. China is McDonalds’ third-biggest market by store numbers.
♦ Off-duty police officer Tito M. Rodriguez was struck and killed after being hit by a car while he was riding his motorcycle.

♦ Dropbox is expanding to Europe.
♦ Blackberry has named Marty Beard its new Chief Operating Officer. He was most recently chief executive officer of LiveOps Inc, a provider of cloud applications for customer service. Prior to that he was an executive of Sybase, an enterprise(B2B) software maker.

WORLD NEWS

♦ French President Francois Hollande is set to wed. At one time last year he was dating Valerie Trierweiler and Julie Gayet. Once it was revealed in French media about his relationship with Ms. Gayet while Ms. Trierweiler was in the hospital, she moved out.
♦ Why didn’t he advocate this when he wasn’t the 2nd richest man in the world? Carlos Slim is joining the ranks of many men who no doubt toiled long hours and days before accumulating their wealth, to advocate for 3 day work week. The telecoms tycoon said during a business conference in Paraguay, we should be working only three days a week. “People are going to have to work for more years, until they are 70 or 75, and just work three days a week – perhaps 11 hours a day.
♦ Investigation into the downed Malaysian Airlines MH17 plane continues. Over the weekend forensic scientists were given access to the site. There has also been complaints of how the dead bodies are being treated after being left outdoors in 85 degree temps over 3 days.
