♦ Dollar Tree has offered to buy rival Family Dollar at $74.50 per share in cash, for a deal worth about $8.5billion and will create the largest discount retailer in North America according to reports by Reuters. Family Dollar shareholders will get $59.60 in cash and $14.90 in stock for each share they hold. Family Dollar caters to lower-income shoppers, many living paycheck to paycheck, while Dollar Tree mostly targets the middle class.
♦ 14 people were struck by lightning during a summer thunderstorm that hit a Venice area beach and a 20-year-old man has died.
♦ Virgin America Inc has filed for a US IPO. The low-cost airline which began flying in 2007 has earned high rankings as well as enthusiastic customer support. Barclays and Deutsche Bank Securities are the lead underwriters for the offering. The Virgin Group was founded in 1970 by Sir Richard Branson who currently holds 22% stake in the company.

♦ The Ebola Outbreak is spreading and has claimed another life prompting Liberia to shut down it’s border. Nigeria largest’s airline, Arik Air, has suspended all flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone after a Liberian man infected with Ebola flew to Nigeria last week and died. 660 people in West Africa have died from the virus since February of this year. it has also claimed the life of prominent Liberian doctor, Samuel Brisbane, who died after a three-week battle with the virus.
