Pabst Castle Back Under Construction

The Pabst Castle, a former Pabst Brewing Company bottling plant at 1834 S. Charles St. in South Baltimore, appears to be back on track for a long-awaited renovation. The castle was formerly the home of Maryland Glass & Mirror Co., was then eyed to be the home of Chesapeake Craft Brewers, and now has been purchased by a new owner. SouthBMore.com spoke with a representative of the new ownership who said castle will become boutique office space, likely for two companies. The owners are very excited about the location and are in the process of talking with designers. Restoration work has resumed on the exterior of the building.

South Baltimore real estate development has been red hot in recent years with more than 900 residential units in the pipeline, including a recently announced proposal for a 305-unit apartment building at 1100 Key Hwy. This was the largest residential project proposed for South Baltimore yet, but now Otterbein could be getting two new apartments with 350 apartments each.

The Baltimore Business Journal is reporting that the former University of Maryland Specialty Hospital at 601 S. Charles St. could be the future home of a six-story, 350-unit apartment building developed by Orlando, FL-based Zom Holding Inc. From the article:

Zom, based in Orlando, Fla., with offices in Washington, D.C., would build a six-story building on the 2.2-acre site at 601 S. Charles St. that would be rich in amenities and target the higher-end of the city’s fast-growing apartment market. Zom is still in the early stages of a negotiating with the Abell Foundation, which purchased the hospital for $7.5 million with plans to establish a charter school there.

The Baltimore Sun is reporting that Pikesville-based Questar is planning a 40-45 story apartment tower on the eastern portion of the parking lot at 414 Light St., the former home of a McCormick spice factory. The property is directly across the street from the Inner Harbor and adjacent to Harbor Court complex. The high-rise would have 350-370 apartments. Questar will be revealing their plans for the first time today, April 10th at 3pm before Baltimore’s Urban Design & Architecture Review Panel (UDARP).
