Designing A Chic Modern Loft

Decorating a modern living space is one of our favorite assignments. In a former commercial space, which was once completely open from one end of the building to the other, we’ve carved a new layout of individual rooms including an updated kitchen, a luxe master bedroom, a walk-in closet, and an adorable nursery-ready to be in service just in the nick of time. Now we turn our attention to the main living area. There must be room for plenty of books, as this couple are big readers, and baskets where toys and such can be tucked away from view. At this juncture, we begin to have conversations with our clients about how they will relax and unwind in the living room space when they retreat from their busy work lives. The coziest living spaces have an eclectic mix of hard and soft materials, including organic details in plenty of different shapes and sizes. The primary goal is for the space to look and feel comfortable, yet elegant, with just the right amount of personality. For inspiration, we turned to Pinterest, to look at rooms that inspired. The room Nate Berkus designed below is a wonderful example of keeping it simple but still mixing it up.

Tall ceilings give rooms such an advantage, and can open up opportunities to include lighting fixtures like this one below, which makes a statement, but doesn’t look at all overdone.
Keeping the color scheme in tints and shades of neutral has a very calming effect. To pull this off, it’s important to have many different organic elements, i.e., glass, metal, wood, rattan, etc.

Adding a portrait wall on white painted walls with tall ceilings is a wonderful way to give a large room some personality, particularly if the images have some relationship to the homeowners, even in theory.

Look at the mix of different scale of artwork used in this space. It contributes to the eclectic feel. The unusual chairs in the foreground are show stoppers.

Artwork (and it doesn’t have to break the bank), books, and simple accessories are the contributors of color into this modern room.

The shapes of the furniture pieces themselves are significant. It’s important to have a mix of shapes and materials to give the room some dimension.

Follow us in the coming weeks as we scheme the space we’re designing. We’re all really excited to be putting it together. Let us know if you have any inspiration to share, too!
