Movie Review: Cary Hill’s Retro Slasher Scream Park Coming to DVD and VOD TODAY (4/22/14)
If you read my blog on a regular basis you might recall that I am a big fan of horror movies. It doesn’t matter to me if the horror if due to an monster, psycho killer or some creepy being from out of this world. As long as it keeps me on the edge of my seat that is all that matters to me. I am just not a fan of overly gory horror flicks. I think that trying to gross our viewers is redundant. A little gore is fine but too much gore is overkill.
Whenever I hear about a new horror movie being released I want to check it out.
I had the opportunity to review the film Scream Park which is available TODAY on VOD and DVD.
Fright Land Amusement Park is your typical small town amusement park. It has a roller coaster, Tilt-a-Whirl, haunted house and plenty of carnival games. Sadly, the park has not been doing well in recent years and not making enough money to stay open. People are just as into amusement parks as they used to be (I beg to differ – if we had one near by we’d go to it all the time).
The park’s owner has decided it’s time to close it’s doors. He also agrees to let the remaining staffers have a farewell party before the doors are shut for good.
The party never really gets underway because the staff seem to be disappearing one by one, that is until the manager and one of the staffers come across two men dressed in masks. They then realize something is seriously wrong and soon learn that their suspicious are right – someone is killing off the staff members one by one. But who? And why? To find out you need to order Scream Park on VOD or pick up the DVD.
To be honest with you I was anticipating this movie to be a total “gore fest”. These days people who make horror movies feel the need to try and out gross all other movies with tons of blood, guts and carnage. Thankfully this movie did not go that route. If it did I would have turned it off and moved on to another movie that I need to review.
The movie was inspired by classic 80′s horror/slasher flicks. I would liken it to those films where people are stuck at a camp and trying to escape a psychotic killed like Friday the 13th (not the original), Sleepaway Camp, Cheerleader Camp and so forth. There is some nudity in this film, but not as bad as I thought there would be. Even in classic flicks like Friday the 13th there was nudity (personally I don’t think it’s necessary).
Scream Park also paid homage to 80′s slasher/horror films by the closing the actors wore (the manager wears HUGE glasses similar to ones my husband wore back when he was in high school in the 80′s). The film also had the “must have” characters which seem to be a staple in horror flicks from that time period – the couple that likes to have sex, a jock, a ditzy female and of course one female that seems to get free from all the predicaments she finds herself in with the killer/killers.
The killer’s masks are pretty cool. I know I would be totally freaked out if I saw them coming at me.
With today’s special effects I was surprised to see that the film’s special effects were not high tech. I think that adds to the charm of the film. Once again they are paying homage to the films of the 80′s and the types and quality of special effects you would see in those films.
I’m a die hard horror movie fan. I did not find this movie scary. It was more so a thriller with a touch of off beat comedy to it. I could see this being a popular film with the sleepover party sector and those who like kitschy horror flicks and don’t take things too seriously. This movie was made to be fun and entertaining and I would say it succeeded in doing that.
I did not see any bonus features in the screen copy that I received. There will be bonus features on the retail copies.
Scream Park has a suggested retail price of $14.95 and will be available at major retailers nationwide including Walmart, Amazon and Best Buy.
