Movie Review – Cabin Fever: Patient Zero

Available today on DVD is the horror film Cabin Fever: Patient Zero.

I have seen Cabin Fever, but not Cabin Fever 2. I am not sure if this is the third film in the series or something entirely different. There wasn’t even a cabin in this film (it was a research facility). Patient Zero would have been a more appropriate title.

The film starts off with people dressed in haz-mat type clothing entering a home. There they find a dead man and other man who is alive.

We next see the man that was found alive (Sean Astin) being held prisoner at a research facility. He’s being kept there because there is a virus outbreak and he has not be affected by it – therefore he is some how immune to it. The researchers want to examine him to figure out why he has this immunity.

Next we see a group of people gathering for an upcoming wedding. For his bachelor party the groom’s friends rent a boat and want to take him to a deserted island for one last “hoorah” before the wedding.

The group take off on the boat and travel far away to a deserted island. Before heading off to the island they see a building on the island but their ship’s captain assures them that no one is on the island.

Once the group settles in two of them take off to do some snorkeling. Initially they don’t find any fish – or any other living creature – in the water. Then they happen across a plethora of dead and decaying fish. They immediately get out of the water.

The girl starts to develop a nasty rash and feels sick. The rash spreads to the point that she’s in a lot of pain. They need to find help and get her off the island to seek medical attention.

The group is unable to reach anyone by phone so two of the men take off to the deserted building to see if anyone is there who can help them or if they can find another way to get help. What they find is a deserted research facility.

They are not alone on the island or in the building. They soon stumble across zombie like beings. As they try and escape them they get deeper and deeper inside and underground facility being chased by zombies.

Will the group be able to get off the island before it’s too late? Who inhabits the island? How did these people turn into zombies? Who was the man that was rescued and being held by researchers? Is there a connection? To find out you need to pick up a copy (or rent) Cabin Fever: Patient Zero available today wherever most movies are sold.

This film is classified as a horror film but I didn’t find it scary.

If you love gore and a lot of blood you’ll enjoy this film. There was certainly a lot of it.

Die hard horror movie fans will be bored and not amused by this film. For those who are easily scared and squeamish about gore you’ll enjoy this one.

The film had potential but it didn’t seem to pull it off. It was like two movies in one only coming together at the end. The ending also left me scratching my head. I don’t really understand what happened. I might have to pop the movie in the player again to re-watch the last 5 minutes to see if I can figure out the ending.

Here is the film’s trailer for your entertainment.
