Movie Review: Draft Day plus giveaway (ends 9/20/14)

It’s football season. Changes are football fans have already had their fill of the game with Thursday night football, football all day on Sunday and not one but TWO Monday night football games today (Sept. 8th). So far it looks like it’s going to be a great season. Not for all teams (my husband’s team especially) but the season just started so there is still time to turn things around.

My husband’s birthday is in April around the same time as the NFL draft. For his birthday every year he doesn’t ask for a gift but rather to be able to sit and watch the draft play out on television. How he can sit and watch it for hours at a time I’ll never know.

One day I hope to surprise him with passes to be at the draft in person. They hold it at Radio City Music Hall which is not too far away from where we live. That would be a dream come true.

To be honest, watching the draft can be dull, especially if you are not a die hard fan or have a vested interest in one of the players. At least that is how I looked at it until I saw the film Draft Day.

Draft Day stars Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, Sam Elliot, Terry Crews, Frank Langella, Denis Leary and Sean Combs. This is an impressive all start cast.

What you see on television when you watch the NFL draft is nothing compared to the drama, wheeling and dealing that goes on behind the scenes in the “war room”.

Kevin Costner plays Sonny Weaver Jr., the General Manager of the Cleveland Browns. As the General Manager it’s his responsibility to pick the best players for his team. Since his team is in a “funk” it’s important that he makes some great picks for his team at the draft.

Sonny father recently passed away which only adds to his stress. To make things even more stressful his girlfriend Ali (Jennifer Garner) is pregnant.

How he doesn’t snap under all this pressure I’ll never know.

I think I got whip lash when it came to all the wheeling and dealing to trade draft picks with other teams. After a while I got lost but my husband was almost mesmerized by the whole film. He “got it”.

I foolishly thought this film had another story line and that the draft stuff was secondary. That was not the case. This film is all about the draft and what goes on behind the scenes. Soap operas don’t have nothing on the NFL Draft! It’s crazy confusing and very stressful. Even I was getting a bit frazzled by the situation.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a good film, but I think you have to be really into football to appreciate the film as much as it should be. My husband loved it. He thought it was fantastic. I got lost and sort of gave up trying to keep up with things and just enjoyed the film “as is” without getting too deep in thought about it.

I think all the actors did a fantastic job. I was a bit surprised by Jennifer Garner in the role of Ali, but she made it work. I’m so used to seeing Jennifer in silly, light hearted films like 13 Going on 30 and The Odd Life of Timothy Green. I’m not used to seeing her in more serious roles.

I was surprised to see Sean Combs in the film. I never thought of him as an actor but he did really well in his role.

Football fan will enjoy the cameo appearances from actual NFL players like Deon Sanders, Jon Gruden and Ray Lewis.

The film comes with special features.
