What’s In The Bible: Why Do We Call It Christmas?

Christmas time can be a bit confusing for little ones, and some adults too. We all know the story about the birth of Jesus, and that he is the real reason for the season, but how did Santa Claus come into the picture? Why do we hang stockings and decorate Christmas trees? After all they didn’t have a Christmas tree in the manage when baby Jesus was born.

A new DVD from Veggie Tales creator Phil Vischer explains how all the traditional holiday traditions are linked back the birth of Jesus. It’s called What’s In The Bible: Why Do We Call It Christmas? Believe it or not there is a connection for each and every holiday tradition.

Cutting down trees? Hanging stockings? Santa Claus? What do any of these have to do with Jesus’ birthday? More than you’d think!
Join VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer along with intrepid newsman Buck Denver and all his friends on an amazing journey into the world’s most popular holiday! Sure, you know the Christmas story. But do you know the story of Christmas? Don’t miss the whimsical, educational, Christmical party to end all Christmas parties as Buck Denver Asks … Why Do We Call It Christmas?

The DVD touches upon the following questions.

-Where do we get the word Christmas?

-When was Jesus born?

-What do Christmas trees have to do with Jesus?

-Who is St. Nicholas?

-What is Hanukkah?

And many more questions are answered by Buck Denver and his friends.

Here is the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.

I had the opportunity to watch the film. I honestly thought it was going to be geared only towards little kids, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that the film was enjoyable for both young and old alike. There were scenes that adults would find funny where as little kids might not “get it” and vice versa.

To be honest with you I didn’t know about a lot of the topics explained in the DVD. I knew why we hung stockings by the fireplace, and I knew why people put oranges in their stockings, but that is about it. Plus I didn’t know there was a connection to the birth of Jesus with any of these holiday traditions.

Even the name Christmas. I didn’t know what the connection was. I know there is “Christ” in the word to represent Jesus, but that is it. Thanks to the DVD What’s In The Bible: Why Do We Call It Christmas? I learned that in Europe they used to hold special masses in honor of the birth of Jesus. They were know as Christ’s Mass. Some where along the way it was shortened to just Christmas. Interesting…

A lot of interesting facts about Christmas are shared in this movie, things that both children and adults would find interesting. I would consider this a “family” film, not just a kiddie movie.

There are a lot of whimsical and interesting characters in the movie including a rickshaw driving monkey, a Pirate named Pete, a talking Popsicle stick puppet, robots and a little boy who insists that you can shoot missiles from your toes (aka – Mistletoe).

The film is done with a combination of puppetry and animation. The characters are cute and very likable.

This would make a wonderful film to add to your family’s holiday film collection as well as a film that could be shared with a Sunday School classroom. I like that this film can be used in conjunction with discussions about the real reason behind the holiday. It’s NOT about getting gifts, candy canes and days off from school. There is so much more to the holiday.
