Interviewing: Mark Rabadan, the Fashion photographer

Hoy, nuestro entrevistado, el fotógrafo de moda Mark Rabadan, va a cambiar su punto de vista y va a dejar de estar detrás de la cámara para pasar a ser el enfocado. No está muy acostumbrado a esto.
Mark, nacido en Barcelona, enfocó sus estudios universitarios hacia la rama del Arte y del Diseño y quiso dedicar su carrera al fotorreportaje de moda. Al finalizar sus estudios, recibió una beca en fotografía de moda y publicitaria. Al poco tiempo decidió mudarse a Londres, ciudad en la que actualmente reside y produce su trabajo, aunque viaja constantemente a Nueva York y París gracias a su trabajo. Pero, ¿por qué él y ahora? Pues porque, a pesar de su juventud, ha trabajado ya para publicaciones como I-D, V Magazine, L’Officiel y Paper Magazine, ha trabajado -y trabaja- para firmas internacionales haciendo campañas mundiales, y aún no ha pasado de sus veinte y tantos.
Today, our interviewee Mark Rabadan, the fashion photographer, is going to change his point of view, so he is becoming our focus rather of being behind the camera. He is not used to that.
Mark was born in Barcelona, he focused his studies in Arts and Design and he wanted to become a photojournalist specialized in fashion. When he finished studying he got a studentship in Fashion and Advertising Photography. Shortly thereafter he moved to London, where he nowadays resides and produces his work, although he is constantly travelling to NY and Paris thanks to his job. But why he and now? Because however his youth, he has already worked for publishings like I-D, V Magazine, L’Officiel and Paper Magazine, he has worked -and still working- with international brands for global campaigns and he is still on his twenties.
¿A qué edad te iniciaste en la profesión? / What age did you start working as a photographer professionally?
Desde siempre quise orientarme hacia la ilustración y el diseño, así que cursé estudios universitarios en Arte y Diseño. Mis padres me compraron una cámara cuando era muy pequeño y solía usarla a escondidas porque era de color rojo y me daba vergüenza que la gente me viera paseando con ella. A veces me escapaba a lugares donde no había mucha gente para usarla y en esos momentos era donde me encontraba conmigo mismo. Es ahí donde empezó mi deseo por explorar más con ese medio. Pero, profesionalmente, me inicé a los 22 años. / I have always been interested in illustration and design, so I got a college degree in Arts and Design. When I was little, my parents gave me a red camera that I was ashamed that people could see me walking with it. I liked to escape to hidden or solitary places to use it, and I found there myself. It was at that point when my desire about exploring and knowing more about this started growing. But I started working professionally when I was 22 years old.
¿Siempre supiste que te querías dedicar a la fotografía de moda? ¿Qué te hizo decidirte por esta opción? / Did you always know that you wanted to work as a fashion photographer? What was the reason/event that made you decide to be a fashion photographer?
Empecé realizando encargos como reportero, y a partir de mis primeras experiencias con el retrato me interesé en explorar el fashion. / I started receiving some commissions to work as a photojournalist, and from having these experiencies with portraits, I wanted to explore more about the fashion photojournalism.
¿Quién y qué te inspira? ¿Qué fotógrafos te han inspirado siempre? / Whom and what inspires you? Which photographers inpire you?
Mi inspiración viene de todos aquellos lugares donde viajo y la gente que veo, conozco y con la que me relaciono. Me suelen inspirar las caras de la gente y sus modos de hacer y gestos particulares de las mismas. Pero mas allá de eso, la ciencia ficción y el “futuro” son temáticas que me fascinan y a la vez mi inspiran. / I get inspiration from all my trips and from the people I get to know on my way, people that I see in the streets and people who I interact with. But beyond that, I am fascinated about Sci-Fi and I am a lover of futuristic themes, therefore I get inspiration from that as well.
¿Alguna película de ciencia ficción a la que hacer especial mención? / Which Sci-Fi film would you like to mention?
Blade Runner.
¿Cuáles fueron tus primeros pasos, tu primer encargo como fotógrafo? / What were your first steps, your first job as a photographer?
Los primeros contactos profesionales los tomé de agencias de modelos. Empecé haciendo “tests” de intercambio con esas mismas agencias hasta que, después de un tiempo colaborando gratuitamente y cuando ya tuve un portfolio, empezaron a remunerarme por mis trabajos. De ahí empecé a realizar editoriales de moda comisionadas por revistas y, en consecuencia, empezaron a contactarme clientes para hacer pequeños trabajos comerciales como lookbooks y pequeñas campañas. / I got my firsts professional contacts through models agencies. I started exchanging work with them: I use to collaborate for free until I got a portfolio. Since then, I started been payed for my work. At that point I started making fashion editorials for magazines, therefore many new clients contacted me and I could work doing lookbooks and small campaigns.
¿Cuál es el trabajo que has realizado del que te sientes más orgulloso? / What is the work that you have done that makes you feel more proud of it?
Como profesional detallista que soy, nunca me siento orgulloso o satisfecho al 100% de mis trabajos. Mientras que el público o mis clientes se sienten contentos con mi trabajo, yo siempre veo cosas que se pueden mejorar, creo que siempre se sigue creciendo. Pero si tengo que escoger uno de mis trabajos, sin duda mi favorito es uno que hice con V-Magazine. (Abajo)./ As a perfectionist professional that I am, I never feel 100% satisfied with my own work. While my clients or people could feel I have done an exccellent work, I always see things that can be improved. I think that I always still growing as a professional. But if I have to choose one of my works, that would be one that I shot with V-Magazine. (See below)

¿Cómo consigues que el/la modelo se sienta a gusto en la sesión? ¿Cómo consigues conectar con ellos? ¿Es siempre fácil? / How do you manage it to get a relaxed environment at the photoshooting? How do you manage it to connect with the models? Is it always easy?
Cada situación/persona es diferente, siempre uno trata de adaptarse al perfil de persona y adaptarla a la situación haciéndola la mas relajada y agradable posible. / Every situation/person is different, I always try to addapt myself to the kind of person I am working with so I get a more relaxed environment.
¿Alguna vez has tenido que abandonar una sesión fotográfica debido a problemas con el/la modelo? / Have you ever had to leave a session due to some issues with the model?
De momento no me ha pasado nada igual y espero no tener esa mala suerte. / So far I have never had such kind of problem, never lived so unlucky situation and I hope it will never happen.
Cuéntanos alguna anécdota destacable que te haya sucedido trabajando. / Tell us about any remarkable anecdote that happened to you whilst working.
Hace un año tuve un modelo de resaca que acabó vomitando en medio de la sesión. Era una editorial un domingo por la mañana. La modelo llegó con retraso comentando que se encontraba mal. Estábamos disparando, en estudio, una sesión editorial de retrato para una revista, y desde el principio noté un poco extraña la modelo. En el segundo look las expresiones iban cambiando poco a poco hasta que, en el tercer cambio, cuando la modelo estaba en el backstage preparándose, escuchamos un ruido extraño acompañado de unos chillidos de impresión (del maquillador). Al entrar en la zona del backstage vimos el regalo que nos había dejado… ¡mejor no doy detalles! Así que tuvimos que llamar a la agencia para comentar lo ocurrido, llamar a un taxi y mandar a la chica a reposar… La sesión obviamente se tuvo que suspender y aprovechamos el resto de la mañana para hacer un vermout./ One year ago I had to work with a model who came drunk to the session and he ended throwing up in the middle of the shooting. It was for an editorial a Sunday morning. The model arrived late saying that she was not feeling alright. We were in a studio and it was a portrait photoshooting. I could feel her a little bit weird. In the second look her expressions were changing slowly, until in the third look, when the model was in the backstage getting changed, we heard a strange noise followed by some yells (from the make-up artist). We got into the backstage and we could see the present that she left there… ¡I better do not give details! So we had to explain to her agency all that happened, call a cab and send her home to rest… The session was postponed but we could take advantage of the time and go to have a nice Vermoouth.
¿Tienes alguna manía o sigues algún tipo de ritual o costumbre que necesites poner en práctica antes y/o durante cada sesión? En definitiva, ¿eres supersticioso? / Do you follow any kind of ritual that helps you to feel better about the development of the work session before starting? Are you superstitious?
Me gusta tener todo muy bien organizado en el set y como costumbre tener un bol de uvas para ir picando constantemente. / I like to have all the things very well organized before starting, and, as an habit, I like to have a bowl with grapes to be eating while working.
¿En qué te basas para aceptar o declinar cada trabajo que te ofrecen? / What thing makes you to accept or decline an offer job?
No declino muchos trabajos, si lo hago es por que creo que no correspondan mi perfil de trabajo. / I do not use to decline many orders, but If I do it is because I do not feel identified with that.
¿Te gustaría quedarte a vivir en Londres siempre o sueñas con mudarte a otra ciudad? ¿Cuál y por qué? / Would you like to stay in London forever or would you love to move to another city? Which one and why?
El futuro lo dirá, de momento tengo base aquí (Londres), supongo que todo lo definirá el trabajo. Pero en un futuro me gustaría volver a Barcelona./ The future will tell, I am based in London by the moment and I guess that my future will be determined by my job. But I would like to go back to Barcelona in the future.
¿En qué se caracteriza tu estilo? ¿Cómo lo autodefines? / How do you describe your style? What is characteristic about it?
No soy demasiado bueno en definirme a mí mismo, pero me gusta ser dinámico. / I am not good at describing myself but I like to be dynamic.
¿Aceptarías trabajos como fotógrafo pero en otras disciplinas? Por ejemplo: paisajístico, retratos nupciales… / Would you accept orders in other disciplines like, for instance, landscapes, wedding portraits, etc.?
No porque no me siento atraído por estas u otras temáticas. / No because I do not feel attracted to these or other subjects.
