7 things do to in Newcastle

So much to do and so little time.

7 things do to in Newcastle

1. BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art

On the south bank of the River Tyne in Gateshead the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art is housed in an industrial building and a unique gallery, presenting a dynamic and diverse international program of contemporary visual art. Artists such as Yoko Ono and Julian Opie have exhibited here and, good to know, admission is free.

2. Gateshead Millennium Bridge

Only celebrated its 10th birthday in 2011 the Gateshead Millennium Bridge is already an iconic landmark in Newcastle. The bridge is the last in line of 7 distinguished bridges accros the River Tyne and is well worth a visit.

3. BODY WORLDS Vital – The Exhibition of Real Human Bodies

Until November 2 the internationally renowned (and perhaps loathed) Exhibition of Real Human Bodies is on display in the International Centre for Life in Newcastle. Only for the die-hards!

4. Shop ’till you drop

Newcastle is the perfect place for some serious shopping. Some people might even consider it the top shopping destination in the North East with shops raning from high-street department stores as Primark, Marks and Spencer and Top Shop to vintage and desginer boutiques.

Visit ‘Oxford Street of the North’ Northumberland Street to spend some serious money, the shopping centre on Eldon Square or indoor markets like Grainger Market, where you can find butcher shops and vegetables amongst others.

5. Great North Museum

The Great North Museum has fossils, mummies, and stuffed animals on display and shows the history of the local area. Located close to Newcastle University campus, near Haymarket metro station. Admission is free.

Gratis toegang.

6. Plan a trip to Hogwarts

Okay, so Alnwick Castle is not really in Newcastle and also not really Hogwarts. But this lovely castle is only 1 hour away from Newcastle and featured as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the first two Harry Potter films. Scenes filmed at the castle include Harry’s first Quidditch lesson and the crash-landing of the flying Ford Anglia. Besides taking a tour to see all film locations you can visit the castle’s State Rooms and wonderful surrounding gardens.

7. Seven Stories

National Centre for Children’s Books Seven Stories is the only place in the UK that is dedicated entirely to the art of children’s books. How cool! More than 70,000 visitors each year visit this awarded education centre where children are inspired to choose, share, read and enjoy the best in children’s literature. Found at 30 Lime Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne, NE1 2PQ.
