Stars & Stripes Patriotic Bunting

I thought I was finished with my Fourth of July decorating

But then I happened upon these red-white-and-blue, stars-and-stripes and polka dot fabric swatches…

…on the remnant table at my local fabric store.

$5, 5 minutes and some rope, and I whipped up this quick and easy patriotic bunting.

I lucked out by finding fabric swatches that were surged on the edges and had grommets attached.

So, all I had to do was thread the fabric flags on some rope and tie them into place with loose knots.

But even if you don’t luck into fabric store swatches like these, this is a DIY that’s easy to copy. Just find some pretty fabric and cut squares with pinking sheers. (Or use patriotic cloth napkins that are already finished on the edges.)

Attach grommets on two corners (or fold the fabric over and glue or sew it to your rope).

And you have an easy way to show your colors and salute the good old U.S.A.

I hung my patriotic bunting above the big window overlooking our front porch, but for the sake of photography, I took a field trip to the barn in our neighborhood and strung my Old Glory banner on a rustic wooden fence.

In this high-tech world of shiny and new, there’s something so appealing about a weathered, gray fence.

The red barn it surrounds has seen the last of its work days. Its paint is faded and peeling, the wood is rotting and the metal roof is rusted out. But it’s solid and true. There’s history in all that character.

That dilapidated old fence and that falling-down barn deserve a salute. They deserve to be draped in stars and stripes and celebrated.

Because they are part of the story of America…

God bless America… the old and the new.
