The Fishtail Twist Tutorial with Raving Fashionista

Hi guys, Sarah from Raving Fashionista here! I had the privilege of partnering with the wonderfully talented team from Essensuals London in Cherry Hill, NJ recently to help create three very easy-to-do hairstyles that only help to make the L. Erickson Crystal Windmill Bobby Pins stand out. The first style we’ll create is called The Fishtail Twist! Stay tuned on The Luxe Look for the other two styles coming soon!

If you’re in the Philadelphia area, I definitely recommend you visit Essensuals London, but in the meantime, check out what they helped me come up with! Each style will take you much less than 30 minutes from start to finish, and these styles are so simple to recreate, anyone can look like they were professionally styled from the comfort of their home.

The Fishtail Twist

The fishtail braid can seem intimidating, but it’s really not; especially since the key is not to worry about being too neat or perfect. To create this look, start with a low ponytail, off to the side of the nape of the neck.

Divide the pony into two equal sections.

From the middle of the back of the right section, cross over to the middle of the font of the left section. Repeat from the middle of the back of the left section, crossing over to the middle of the front of the right section. Make sure to use very thin sections of hair for this, and that you are pulling the thin pieces from behind and over the font. This creates the fishtail braid. If you use pieces that are too thick it will simply look like a regular braid, rather than the fishtail.

Don’t worry about being neat with your braiding, you don’t want it to look too perfect.

Secure the end with a hair tie, and gently pull the sides of the braid to loosen it, creating a wider looking braid.

Remove the hair tie from the end and taking one, small piece of hair from the middle of the bottom of the braid, hold it securely with two fingers, and use your other hand to gently push the braid up towards your head.

Twist the piece of hair you’re left holding around the new “fishtail bun” and pin the “fishtail bun” in place using a L. Erickson Crystal Windmill Bobby Pin.

Use a second L. Erickson Crystal Windmill Bobby Pin to make sure it’s held secure.

Spray with hairspray if desired, and you’re ready to head out the door! See how I styled my Fishtail Twist over on Raving Fashionista.
