Eye99

Thalea Michos-Vellis is the super cutie behind the eye99 Tumblr and Instagram, where she posts lots of photos of her cats and clothes (Comme des Garçons—check; Marni—check; Yayoi Kusama for Louis Vuitton—check). You might have also seen her hanging out in the pages of Oyster or appearing in campaigns for POMS. When she’s not chilling with her pet lizard Jazz, chances are she getting gypsy with it and selling stuff at the Camberwell Markets. We raided her wardrobe and took some photos.

Hi Thalea! Can you tell us three things about yourself, please?

Hello! I was born in 1992, I was named after Zeus’ eighth daughter (the Greek muse of comedy, festivity, and banquets), and I absolutely LOVE potatoes, whether they’re mashed, fried, baked, or crispy.

When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up?

A writer and traveler. I’m still trying to work it all out.

What do you do for work now?

At the moment I work part time at Someday Store, a shop in the Curtain House building in Melbourne. It’s next to Pet Shop Girls, so I am constantly tempted to spend all my pay. When I can, I also do some styling on the side. I’ve recently worked with Perks and Mini, Articles of Clothing, and have had work on Oyster online and in I Love Fake magazine. This is something I hope to continue although I’m really eager to get behind the camera and start taking more photos!

What do you do for fun?

I enjoy doing almost anything with friends, going to the Camberwell market early on a Sunday morning to buy flowers, and dreaming about holidaying in the Greek Islands!

What do you and your best friend get up to when you hang out?

We live with each other so a lot of our time is spent in the kitchen or walking around our neighborhood on the nicer days. We are both fairly determined to make our garden a sanctuary in time for summer so sometimes we spend time weeding and dreaming about all the plants we want but can’t afford…yet.

Can you tell us a bit about your pets?

Of course! I have three pets. One Central Bearded Dragon called Jazz, whose gender I do not know, and two Scottish Fold kittens called Pepi (black) and Zoo (tabby) who I adopted recently. I have had Jazz for six years since she was a newly hatched lizard baby. She/he eats crickets, cockroaches, loves kale, and is sitting with me as I write this. Pepi and Zoo are brothers yet they are 100% different. Pepi is in-your-face affectionate and not camera shy at all, while Zoo is not fond of strangers and will sometimes rather sit in a corner than on my lap. One day I would like to add an Italian Greyhound or Doberman to the family.

Do you remember the moment you first got into fashion and became interested in clothes?

Not exactly! However my mum tells me I started exploring her wardrobe extremely early on and displayed excellent layering and color blocking skills from the age of four…there is a photo somewhere of me wearing head-to-toe green tie-dye.

What’s your dream item of clothing to own?

This is a hard one. There are a few things I would like to own at the moment but none of them are my “dream item.” I’m currently watching an Undercover brain bag from ’08 on eBay, which I’ve thought about for a while now although I feel I’m becoming more practical with what I buy and wear so maybe I shouldn’t purchase a bag shaped as a brain? Not sure.

What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a piece of clothing?

I went to Japan this year on a holiday/shopping trip and had the WORST luck. I couldn’t find anything I really wanted to buy except for this one secondhand dress. It was part of the collaboration between Louis Vuitton and Yayoi Kasuma. I put off buying it for days but as my trip came to an end I gave in and spent a large sum of Yen on it. I felt amazing.

What’s your favourite magazine at the moment?

Novembre has got to be the best print magazine available. Everything from the photos, styling and even the layout is hot and inspiring. I’m a lazy reader so I’m only finishing issue 8 now and am going to buy issue 9 this weekend from World Food Books in Melbourne.

Who are your favourite people to follow on Instagram?

@maryam_nassir_zadeh, @teget, and @ashley_yuka.

Who are your favorite Melbourne-based labels?

Perks and Mini, for their A prints and big fits, and Dress Up, for their attention to detail and timeless designs.

Where are your favourite places in Melbourne to:

Drink coffee:

Kaprica! Usually a popular pizza destination but recently it’s taken a turn! They make great coffee and you can sit out the front on the cutest chairs and bask in the direct sunlight.

Stay out all night:

Since becoming a morning person I haven’t managed to stay out all night! Although when I did I loved to go to Hugs & Kisses until the early morning.

Spend a lot of money:

FOOD. During the week I probably spend a hefty amount of money on pizza. I like any pizza with potato and lots of garlic.

Find peace and quiet:

My balcony, especially in the morning sun, with a cup of Buddhas Tears and my cats! I also really enjoy walking down Merri Creek to CERES market to buy olive bread.
