Nasty Gal x Doug Rickard

For Nasty Gal’s brick-and-mortar debut, we partnered with genre-defying artist Doug Rickard to make us an exclusive shopping bag as gorgeous as the clothes it’s built to hold. We’re giving away a limited number of totes emblazoned with the design he created for our shopping bags to some of the first girls in line to shop at our brand spankin’ new store, so get there early for a chance to grab one! And read on to learn more about the man behind the bosomy bag.
Doug Rickard subscribes to a “no-holds barred welcoming of Internet in ways that will transform society.” Pulling from a vast digital archive that exceeds 500,000 images of pin-ups, transgender individuals and everything in between, Rickard’s complex pastiche of online material comments on race, class, and capitalism. With his genre-defying work, he fanatically explores uncharted territory, feeding his voracious appetite for the internet, and expanding the never-ending online rabbit hole that Nasty Gal is proudly a participant in, and a product of.
When the opportunity arose for Nasty Gal to collaborate with a contemporary artist on a project to commemorate its entrance into the 3-D retail space, Rickard, a pioneer in the digital art world, was an obvious choice. Inspired by B-list buxom blondes and bronzed porn stars of the ’70s and ’80s, Rickard imagined a playfully porn-inspired design that pokes fun at Nasty Gal’s tongue-in-cheek name, and pays homage to its nostalgic roots. In an all-knowing wink declaring that Nasty Gal is in on the joke, the design corresponds with the store’s teaser barricade, which boldly proclaims, “No, we’re not a porn site.”
