5 Days in Scandinavia

We’d never been anywhere in Scandinavia before but its cities have always appealed to us. Their design, style, the climate, lifestyle, the beautiful people and their food. So, when we got the opportunity to team up with InterRail with first class tickets, we jumped at the chance and quickly planned out a 4 cities over 5 days trip.

Copenhagen

Our first stop was a very quick flight to Copenhagen, the place where there’s a Joe & The Juice on every corner and stag dos involve pushing a shopping trolley full of beer around the city centre! Don’t miss a look at the iconic Little Mermaid, a stroll round the Open Air Museum or some shopping in Stroget.

Get into politics at the Christianborg castle and if all that gets you thirsty for a beer, head over to the Carlsberg Brewery Centre. For something really different go down to Christiania and learn about the history surrounding this hippy town, where you can actually legally buy Marijuana from street stalls and taking pictures is sticky prohibited.

Gothenburg

Our first class InterRail tickets meant we could just jump straight on the train without booking and we made use of their easy to use app to see the timetable. We luckily had the whole carriage to ourselves and we went over that bridge, the one from the series The Bridge – what a treat!

Gothenburg is home to Volvo, so you couldn’t come here without having a look at the Volvo museum. There’s also the Alvesborg Fortress which was built to protect the Swedes from a Danish invasion. If you fancy a boat trip go on the Padden Boat Tour which takes you through the canals under low bridges and out into the harbour, or the Archipelago Tour around the islands. If the weather’s not great spend some time exploring Universium. It is a science and discovery centre with a huge aquarium, or go shopping at Nordstan which has over 200 shops, all under cover.

Oslo

The train to Olso took route through vast countryside and mountains which was truly breathtaking. We saw lakes, streams, forests and views which stretched for miles. Norway’s beauty needs to be seen to be appreciated. Be sure to visit the Viking Museum, there are 3 wooden Viking ships and various artefacts from each vessel.

For castles, go to the Akershus Fortress and for modern architecture, The Ski Museum, which also has an observation tower that gives you spectacular views over Oslo. For a pleasant stroll and a coffee, walk along the wharf at Akker Bridge. The main street in central Oslo is Karl Johans Gate and it should keep you busy for a while, especially if you like shopping.
