I Won’t Turn Away
If you are a “steady” follower of my blog, you know I have a few deeply entrenched passions in my soul. Fighting cancer, bullying, and abuse are so ingrained in my nature, I don’t think I could possibly ignore a request for words of support. Heck, I run their logo’s on the right side of my blog. Year round. Did you know, on average more than three women a day are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in the United States? It’s a fact, nearly one in four women in the US reports having experienced violence by a current or former spouse or boyfriend at some point in her life with the partner. Women are 84% of spouse abuse victims and 86% of victims of abuse at the hands of a boyfriend or girlfriend and about three-fourths of the persons who commit family violence are male. The United Nations Development Fund for Women estimates that at least one of every three women globally will be beaten, raped, or otherwise abused in her lifetime. For them, I choose to stand up. I will stand, not because it is a popular thing to do, I stand because it’s the only thing I can do. Stand, be heard, support, embrace, and raise up these women. Let them know I won’t turn my back on them, or cover my eyes, I am here and I care. Won’t you stand with me?

November 25th, according to the United Nations, is the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women“. Why is this date important? This date was chosen after the horrible deaths of Minerva, María Teresa and Patria Mirabal, three women who fought for the freedom of the Dominican Republic while it was under the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. On November 25, 1960, the three sisters along with their driver, Rufino de la Cruz, were visiting Patria and Minerva’s incarcerated husbands. On the way home, they were stopped by Trujillo’s henchmen. The sisters and the driver were separated and were clubbed to death. The bodies were then gathered and put in their Jeep, running it off the mountain road to make it look like an accident. Since 2010 this event has been celebrated in Second Life with a great show lasting about ten days, November 20th to the 30th, 2014, organized by the committee “2Lei in Second Life“, an artistically minded compassionate group of citizens they are ( http://secondlife2lei.blogspot.com/ ). And now is the time, we need you to throw in too because 2Lei is calling out to Second Life’s residents and artists to celebrate with us as we raise awareness of these often silent victims of abuse. Will you stand with me?
