Day in the Life // June
Last year I played along with Ali Edward’s Day in the Life monthly and it was one of my favorite projects ever. This year, I’m repeating the project. On the 15th of each month, I’m going to document my everyday life. I like having a set day because I won’t worry about finding a “representative” or “normal” day. Wherever the 15th falls, that’s what I’ll document.
Here’s Sunday, June 15th, which just happened to be Father’s Day. I also just happened to only capture photos with my phone this round.
I woke up with early bird Jonas (who slept in some) and let Eliza and Jake sleep for a few extra hours. I started with coffee, Jonas had a small breakfast, and we worked on cleaning the first floor up a bit. (I really try to not leave dishes overnight, but it always seems to happen.) I woke Jake and Eliza up at 10:00 so they’d have an hour to lounge about and get ready before our family got here.
I made brunch (biscuits and chicken apple gravy with scrambled eggs and cherries), and my dad, step-mom, and great-grandpa came over to celebrate with us. We did not successfully wrangle clothes onto Jonas before they got here, but everyone in our family is used to that by now.
My mom had brunch with us too, and my sister and her boyfriend came to hang out before my dad et al. left. We all sat around talking, mostly, and showing each other technology things, and getting climbed on by Jonas (who eventually dressed himself).
After that we had a bit of time before needing to leave for our next Father’s Day celebration, so everyone got in some hobby time. Jake and my sister’s boyfriend played video games, Eliza worked on this month’s Kiwi Crate, Jonas played in his room building Legos, and I finished up a 2011 Project Life spread and made another page for the current #NerdNestChallenge.
Then it was time to head out to my mom’s side of the family. We left on time, which is pretty much a miracle (we’re, on average, 15 minutes late to everything). On the way there, we listened to Incongruent by Hank Green and the Perfect Strangers. Then I started to read The Giver to Eliza and Jake (Jonas fell asleep).
We celebrated Poppy (my grandpa) and my sister’s birthday, which is right after Father’s Day. Jonas ran around outside with his cousin Nathan (same age), we all hung out, we ate tacos, and we sang to Taylor horribly off key before digging into soggy granny cake.
Then we went to Jake’s dad’s. We got there before Jake’s dad and stop-mom, so we hung out with his aunt (who lives right behind his parents) until they got there. Then there was a lot of playing and sliding. Eliza and Jake’s dad had fun finding stories in the shaving cream art Eliza made. Jake’s dad was very creative and picked the one with a bunny looking at the moon to keep.
Jonas decided to spend the night there. We caught up with Jake’s little brother just as we were leaving.
We read The Giver more on the way back home, and Eliza was really into it so we finished our chapter and snacked before sending her off to bed.
Jake and I relaxed a bit–he coded and I took a bath and read–until our friend Paul was done with playing basketball. We have a long standing Sunday Game of Thrones date. But because the finale was so long, it was too late to start. Jake and I were going to bed, but then we had to mediate other people’s arguing, which made me too upset to sleep, so we hung out and talked with Paul more and ended up staying up later than we would have if we’d just have watched the darn finale. Grown up slumber parties are the best. Then bedtime.
That’s a day in the life at the Nerd Nest! Our holidays are nuts with so many family branches close by. Thankful for that, but also tired.
