Jake and I have found some cool (nerdy) stuff on the web lately. Here’s some of it for you to enjoy!
Nerd culture gets it wrong when it comes to female characters so often (and often has trouble recognizing that female nerds do exist, but that’s a whole other can of worms). One of the prevailing themes tends to be “win the girl” and it’s not okay on so many levels. (Even in the Lego Movie. Really? Lego Movie?) It’s awesome to read a perspective from a guy who gets it: Your Princess Is in Another Castle: Misogyny, Entitlement, and Nerds.
I’m really loving the National Geographic Daily News blog and am having trouble not letting their links take over here. But there are still a lot of them. Follow the blog yourself if you want a healthy dose of nerd every morning.
I think that bonobos are some of the most fascinating animals on the planet. They share the same percentage of our DNA as chimpanzees but have much different (and kinder) practices, so they can turn arguments about human nature on their head. Recent studies agree: bonobos reveal evolution of human kindness.
If you think bonobos are as interesting as we do, support the endangered animals through Friends of Bonobos.
