Bye Bye, Boyfriend | Hello, Boyfriend Jeans

Boyfriend jeans are back after a couple of years on fashion's sidelines. Currently grappling with skinnies for the most popular pant, boyfriends can be much sexier -- see Gwyneth Paltrow and Gwen Stefani for hot examples. Be warned, the perfect boyfriend, like it's real-life namesake, is tricky to come by. For the desired look, boyfriend jeans should be loose but fitted across the hips, narrow and tapered in the leg, rolled at the hem to no more than an inch above the ankle.
If you haven't already, hunt out your own boyfriend jeans. They are fun to wear and can be easily worn for dressing up and down. Boyfriends look fabulous with a short, fitted jacket and and pointy heels, peep-toe booties or high, chunky wedges. The more ornate your shoe, the better. You could even buy and taper some vintage Levi's to fit if you're handy with a needle and thread. You could even borrow your actual boyfriend's jeans if a). you have a boyfriend and b). he has some decent jeans. If that combination is possible for you then please send pictures of both so the rest of us can weep with envy. My boyfriend isn't the biggest fan of designer jeans, but that's beside the point!
Nothing complements boyfriend jeans like some neat holes and tears. Pictured, the jeans take on a distressed look that embodies the look's vintage roots. Distressed jeans add a certain aura to your look, and it looks very sleek when finished off with the right top and accessories. For a dressier look, opt for darker boyfriend jeans. Add a bright blouse if it's for daytime, or a darker top if it's for a night out. Don't forget your heels, too. For a more casual style, aim for lighter wash jeans and flat shoes or plain, simple heels. Espadrilles, Converse sneakers or even a pair of Tory Burch Reva flats are great footwear to complete a casual boyfriend jean outfit. There are many variations with denim color, levels of distress and so on, so keep on trying them on and searching around before you settle. It's OK to be just as picky as if you were looking for a real boyfriend!
Over the past few years, brands Current Elliott, Citizens of Humanity and J Brand -- to name a few -- stole the leading look from older denim brands by creating lighter, more stylish looks women love. There is something fun and vintage-esque about all this "blast from the past" boyfriend jeans business, too. No matter what is happening elsewhere on your outfit, a cool trouser shape connects you with your inner fashionista. Wherever your heart is, you never feel lonely in the right outfit -- or the right jeans!
Ditch your boyfriend and opt for a fabulous pair of jeans. (Sorry, Zach) xx, ZM PHOTO VIA PINTEREST
