snippets of home: my little desk.

My apartment is tiny. I've said that before. Even still, it's easiest to share it in bits and pieces, mainly because each room is so small that I can't capture more than a little corner at a time with my fixed lens. I've shared tiny snippets of my apartment before (here and here) but never really much of my bedroom, mainly because it's all still pretty unfinished. I thought I'd share my little bedroom workspace today. It's mostly just a blank canvas, but it's a perfect fit for our little space. When we moved in, we quickly realized that we had to choose between a desk or a dresser in our bedroom. We couldn't have both. Since there certainly wasn't room for a desk in the living room, and because I was convinced I could find a way to fit both of our entire wardrobes into our tiny closet, we opted for a desk. I've never been a "work at a desk" kind of girl. And I'm still not to this day, but I of course had grand delusions that I would set up an idyllic little workspace that would fuel me with energy and inspiration and motivation, and where I'd be content to spend hours on end. But of course, I quickly realized that I would always choose my bed or the couch as a workspace over a desk, so our desk area has sadly remained fairly neglected in terms of actually functioning as a workspace, and instead has mostly become a place where we throw clothes when we're trying to be good by not just throwing them on the floor! Because we so rarely use it as a workspace, It still remains a bit of a blank slate and lacks a lot of life. We didn't even have a desk chair until eight months after we moved in! I sort of had in my head what I wanted (upholstered, but not a parsons chair, solid color that wasn't white, etc) but of course couldn't find one anywhere for a reasonable price. We finally bought a chair a few months ago. It's not really my style or ideal colors, but it was a good price and at least had some of the qualities I was looking for! We've also really neglected the wall space. Part of me would love to create an inspiration board of sorts, where I can pin up photos of graphic design that I love, colors that I love, and basically anything that inspires me to continually want to do better and dream bigger in my work. Of course, the idea is that this board would motivate me to actually want to work at my desk! Here are a few images of beautiful workspaces with the kind of inspiration boards that I tend to be drawn to: images: one // two // three // four The issue with creating an inspiration board over my desk, however, is that my bed faces the same wall. It's the first thing I see when I open my eyes in the morning and the idea of seeing a mass of clutter gives me hives already. I'm fairly averse to clutter and prefer a clean, simplistic style of living with an absence of as many trinkets as possible. It's why I love living in a tiny apartment. I have no choice but to pare down what I have, resist accumulating new things, and keep only what serves function and what I truly consider to be beautiful. Although an inspiration board would be lovely in an actual office space, it's not entirely realistic for my bedroom/workspace hybrid. I'm tempted to just hang a single piece of framed art. I've shared this print before, but to me, it really is perfection: image. A quote made popular by Steve Jobs in a Stanford commencement address, and words that have stuck with me ever since I first heard them. Possibly more motivational to me than an entire inspiration board could be. On top of that, the typography of this particular print is flawless, a design inspiration in and of itself. It's sadly way out of my price range, but I'd love to make something similar. I'll be sure to share if I do! Thanks for letting me share this little corner of my bedroom with you! It's in need of much improvement, I know, but posting about it actually motivates me to bring it to life. Happy Monday :)
